Thailand as a Future Destination for Relocation
KhunLA replied to kevozman1's topic in General Topics
I wasn't even middle age when I got here @ 45, and no thought of making it to 90. Middle age for me, at best was 35, as just hit 70, and that's a big surprise. Be even more surprised if I make to 80. Already one of the oldest members of the family, now & history wise. -
Actually it doesn't say anything about me. I wouldn't choose Patts for it's nightlife or P4P availability, as don't frequent either. Even avoided a couple of decent restaurants on soi samphan, once daughter got old enough to realize why the soi existed. Yes, both have traffic issues. But Patts closer to things that interest me. The Northeast doesn't interest me at all, or should say, got boring really fast. Any free time, more than a long weekend, and I left the NE area for points much further south. Which due to UT's location, that took 1 day in itself, so 2 days wasted. Most of the time, lived 15+ kms out of town, so delivery wouldn't work, and not a fan of anyway. I usually only eat at restaurants, just to get out of the house. It was quite convenient, when playing single parent, since in town anyway, to pick kid up from school, (St Mary's & Don Bosco) and just eat at one of our favorites, though traffic really wasn't that bad back then. When single, I think we ate in town, every day, and enough favorites to eat somewhere different every time. Not till about 2012, when everyone bought a first or 2nd car in the household, since 100k baht rebate was given, with most purchases. Air pollution being another huge negative about UT. I'd rather look at the surf, rather than rice, sugar or cassava fields. As stated earlier, was tolerable, IF, having to be there. But as soon as not needed to be, I was gone. Rented a place in Prachuap Khiri Khan even before she was done school, as rental options were limited, and didn't want to pass up on what was available at the time. Off topic, but as stated more than a few times, I wouldn't consider living anywhere North of Hua Hin. Usually means 4-6 months are really bad air pollution.

Lived there for 17 yrs, and one of the pluses, a decent food town. Sadly, too many really good places didn't last, as cost a wee bit more, and the CCs thought it was expensive. Seem to be quite content with crap food at low prices, and washed down with even worse, cheapest beer. As good as UT was for a large metro (relative to TH), there were too many negatives for us. Did enjoy popping into town between 1000 - 1500 hrs, for a munch, but basically avoided it at all other times. Traffic was simply horrendous.

Irish diver’s fate revealed on Thailand’s ‘Death Island’
KhunLA replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Are pressure gauges for diving made by Thai companies ? Since he made it back to the surface alive, and died at his hotel, I think it's safe to say, we can rule out his equipment, and the diving industry completely, with being the cause of, or contributing to his death. Y'all are nuts ... -
Intending to buy a new Mitsubishi Pajero on finance.
KhunLA replied to The Fugitive's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
Have to agree with earlier post, why buy another one, if ready to replace this one, with low kms. If wanting to give it away ... I'll take it Cut the back off, and I'll have a pick up. Living rural, nobody will care. -
The 360° Rotating Faucet Purifier: A Life Changing Water Revolution!
KhunLA replied to short-Timer's topic in General Topics
Wow, you made it that far. Only the misrepresented 360° got me to peek at OP. Then skipped down to the link, since no photo, and realized someone doesn't have a clue what 360° actually means. If that made his day, this would give him an orgasm ... -
Irish diver’s fate revealed on Thailand’s ‘Death Island’
KhunLA replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
You really don't have a clue about the diving sport. Underfilling tanks, just isn't going to happen. Think about a bar that sell weak drinks, or tap beer and doesn't give you a full glass of. How long would they stay in business. An inaccurate gauge ... don't think so, that's a lawsuit no manufacturer wants to face. A thread full of ignorant detectives with no info to go on. People know only 1 fact, someone died, that is all. Nothing new revealed in this CB thread, except how ignorant people are of the diving sport & industry. -
Talking to Thais, have you ever had "Pow Wow" moments?
KhunLA replied to Jingthing's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Replying, so I obviously un-cancelled you. But yes, you should cancel yourself, as I find most of your postings extremely bigoted and bias. IMHO Just an observation, as sure yourself & others, consider many, if not all of mine in the same way. Oh well -
Study Rings Alarm: Thai Children Face Rising Obesity Crisis
KhunLA replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Don't think you need a study, just open one's eye. Little porkers are everywhere. See a group of kids, and half will have a sugary drink in their hand. In the other hand is a smartphone, replacing any physical activity. As a youngin, even a poor teen, we use to walk or cycle everywhere, not driven around. -
Nutrition for Healthy Aging: A Guide to Eating Well in Later Years
KhunLA replied to CharlieH's topic in The Wellness Zone
I eat eggs everyday for first meal, and as stated, a 'perfect food', of fat & protein. At least 2 XL (-0-), if not more later on in the day. Keto - ish for me. Still addicted to bread, though in moderation now, vs the staple it used to be. Did cut most sugars & starches out of my diet. 2 XL / #0 eggs = 140 gr -
Just one little drink a day may seriously affect your health
KhunLA replied to Rimmer's topic in The Wellness Zone
Certainly shouldn't surprise anyone. Thinking 1 or 2 drinks a day wasn't unhealthy or even considered healthy could have only been funded by alcohol groups. Luckily never addicted, but certainly is habit forming. I stopped indulging 'almost' completely. Don't miss it at all. Definitely a hard habit to break, as the marketing is very effective. -
Navigating the World’s Most Dangerous Countries in 2025
KhunLA replied to Social Media's topic in World News
Judging from AN, this statement is obviously spot on ... ... "While most regions have experienced escalating risks, the UK maintains a "low" rating in security, medical, and climate risks, although its mental health statistics indicate a notable proportion of the population dealing with mental health issues." ... Contrary to that unstable mental thinking, 'how unsafe the gun toting Yanks are' ... ... "In contrast, some countries remain relatively safe from a security perspective. Nations like Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Morocco, and Vietnam are considered among the safest, offering a stark contrast to the high-risk regions." ... Certainly won't be going to Africa anytime soon. List for those seeking retirement locations, though don't think some were in anyone's top 10. -
I am leaving Thailand - yes taxes!!!
KhunLA replied to Celsius's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
I guess you should have brought that in last month. Not like people didn't have plenty of warning. -
Don't want to go off topic, but if at Korat, click on a few of those photos in the link I posted (left side), and some tasty looking dishes.

Tried ... that started off a bit ominous Ouch ... that's going to hurt 2nd hand market. Even the new market, for folks not paying cash, and like new cars every couple of years. Good luck selling the old one. Need to take what ever the tent folks will be offering, and that ain't going to be what you hoped for

I am leaving Thailand - yes taxes!!!
KhunLA replied to Celsius's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Again ... mine #s base on single person, no deductions, age 50-64, on visa for retirement, bringing in ฿800k income Myself also, if having taxable income, would be exempt for 60k+60k+150k+190k=460k, plus another 30% deductible, due to her retirement funds. Don't have any other deductions, I don't think. Wouldn't leave much, if any taxable income, if our income was even taxable, which none of it is. -

KhunLA replied to Celsius's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Don't know where you are getting 600k exemptions from. I did forget about the first 150k is exempt, so that would be 210k (150 + 60). Of course if 65 +, then another 190k exempt. My #s are for single person 50-64 on visa for retirement, with no deductions. Most negative scenario. 300k (150k) @ 5% = 7,500 next 200 @ 10% = 20,000 next 90k @ 15% = 13,500 Total ฿41,000 That's not worth leaving for. Taxes definitely aren't an issue. Worse case scenario of ฿41,000 -
For others ... Never a problem, on 11 parcels of land, 2 different provinces, Udon Thani & Prachuap Khiri Khan. Only thing different than a transfer into a Thai / Thai married couple, is a statement I signed, stating all funds to buy, were hers, and I have no vested interest in the land. And usufructs were added in my name to each parcel of land. No lawyer or agents involved, and a fill in the blanks form, filled out and printed off by land office staff, that I signed, for all of a 70 baht charge, I think. All very simple and fast, once called up to start paperwork.

How do you figure that ? 800k - 60k = 740k @ 15% if no other deductions, as my example, most negative scenario, for a single person. Married folks, as I stated, especially if having kids, would haven't much if any taxable. -
I am leaving Thailand - yes taxes!!!
KhunLA replied to Celsius's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
I can almost see taxes as the only reason for someone to leave, if having no other reason to stay. Thinking most, I would imagine, leaning that way, having a -0- visa for retirement. So if brought in the minimum, 800k, w/60k exemption, puts one it the 15% tax bracket, if having no other deductions. That's a bit of money, ฿112,500, (฿9,375 monthly) just for the privilege of staying in TH. If they tie your tax return to your visa extension, and you're one of the one's using an agent, to skirt the financials, then that could royally screw many, if not having the ฿800k required. Only thing to think about, would living elsewhere, cost you more than 15% to live. And any income tax burden at that location. Those married and settled, probably wouldn't be going anywhere, as with exemptions & deductions, may not owe any taxes, and not enough to be concerned about. That's if your home countries DTA doesn't exempt some or all your income, to begin with. For those not here, and thinking about it, single, visa for retirement, no deductions planned, then that ฿112.5k would be enough for me to scratch TH off the list of retirement places. -
Thailand as a Future Destination for Relocation
KhunLA replied to kevozman1's topic in General Topics
Living full on in TH for 24+ years. After 17 years, made final decision to stay and stop thinking about elsewhere. Not much has changed, just a lot more of everything, good & bad. Noticeably more tourists, again, but don't live in a tourist area, except some weekenders. Need a hobby or 2, to keep yourself busy. Getting O&A (out & about) exploring, locally or a far, is always interesting. The journey, if not the destination, as long as you're not in a hurry to go from A to B. There's quite a bit in between, many people don't bother with. It is a small country, relative to where one comes from. I'm a Yank, so very small to me. But still keeps my interest. No plans on going any where, and wouldn't have a clue where to go, as the world is nothing like it was when I arrived. TH is progressing, for good or bad, much slower than the developed countries. Make no mistake, it's still 3rd world IMHO, with many modern things. Just don't 'buy in' and test it out for a few years, in a few areas. See if it's for you, as living here, is much different than visiting. -
BKK Hosp @ Udon Thani used to have an excellent physical therapist. She massaged away a major carpal tunnel issue I was have. Coincidentally, my brother had the exact same issue at the same time. He opted for the surgery (in slice & dice USA) vs my cute therapist. His issues returned, mine never did Although if consistently doing the ... 'stretching, massage, exercise, and of course losing weight', then may be as good as will get, without extreme care not to aggravate it. Manage with some meds, when a bit much, till you can figure out other options other than surgery. Assuming you know exactly what is wrong, which disc/discs or whatever is causing the discomfort. MRI done ? Never heard of the other treatments you are asking about, but haven't paid attention to those things for couple decades. Had back problems for decades, T12-L1 & L4-L5. Finally did have surgery, then retired, so not to aggravate any more. Good Luck
