  1. Not to worry - I have been doing this for many years and often with a much larger bank balance than needed.
  2. I don't know about the banks lending money against land - - we have never needed or wanted to borrow - - but where we live, there has always been a demand for land and it is never advertised but sold by word of mouth. Sometimes owners want 2-3x going rate - I don't think they sell. I have always stressed to my wife to be a patient buyer and only buy the best land - - based on road access and water. Sometimes people will offer less than the best land for a slight discount but mostly she has bought at known market value, even with being patient.
  3. No... what would we have to talk about?
  4. Who isn't bored - Who is on first.
  5. A fellow I know w/a long time ladyboy relationship.. he sent me photos and he now has a LB who looks like a truck driver.
  6. I see them around occasionally but they tend to be quiet and walk about ghostly invisible... Sad, but there are no beautiful lady men.
  7. I always accompany my wife when I buy property for her... I have to sign a document that I will make no claim against the land...
  8. If there were any truth to that you would never cruelly debase people who are overweight... people who can genuinely feel others pain, don't create pain by belittling others. Just saying... hope you get better soon.
  9. Very good idea to define it - - I think most people confuse it with sympathy... mostly I see it defined as 'feeling' someone else's pain... I think that is rare. Empathy means that when you see another person suffering, such as after they've lost a loved one, you are able to instantly envision yourself going through that same experience and feel what they are going through. It happens for me, but not with everyone - and sometimes with total strangers... I mean actually feeling their pain. There were times with close people where I experienced their symptoms. It can be extremely painful.
  10. We started buying farmland about 15 years ago around my wife's village - our first purchase was 40k per rai.. our last purchase was about 5 years ago for 150k per rai... going price is now 250k per rai... my wife is smart and I taught her to only buy great land when reasonably priced... be patient. In addition to the price appreciation, the family farms the land and makes a living. if you want more info, you can pm.
  11. Regrets, I've had a few But then again, too few to mention I did what I had to do And saw it through without exemption I planned each charted course Each careful step along the byway And more, much more than this I did it my way
  12. I usually indicate my 2 locations in Northern Thailand as that is what a Thai wants to know - - if a falang, I tell them where I spent most of my time outside of Thailand... At this point, I have spent about half my adult life here.
  13. If 'alot' bothers you, then you will find an unending source of annoyance here... at least everyone knew what he meant - not a lot of challenge there. [not their]
  14. Well, I live in the countryside and the people are neither stressed nor in a rush... and I love Thai people... I am pleased to have them as friends.
  15. You think that have meetings and committees and discuss such things?
  16. Sorry these things happen - and no fault of your own... get well soon.

  18. Then why ask advice here... I am comfortably mostly in T-Bills at 5+%
  19. You betcha... I stick to what I am good at... I am glad there are people here to carry my groceries when I pull in - mop the floors, grow fresh fruits and veggies for me... take care of the place when I go away...
  20. US Treasury Bonds are currently yielding 5.5% for short terms - - unfortunately no investments can ever guarantee a future... It is nice that you have concerns for your wife - - I do too and have found that the best thing for her is to put money in her name now. And through the years, she has done great, gradually buying farmland - - and as the land has appreciated tremendously, the family has profited through farming... The recommendation of VOO etc is also a good one but being older, you might want to consider that you might not have the time for a longer term investment. I will soon be buying into that fund but at a much smaller % of my funds than I did when I was younger.
  21. I knew an English Professor w/a well educated wife - he was here early in life for a visit and loved it - he wanted them to vacation here and I volunteered to show them around - - she did not want to come because she did not like the idea that she would not be able to understand what the people around her were saying... I think many people are afraid... I think I might be afraid to go back to the USA.
  22. When you put your head on the pillow, repat 3x in a whisper - - "Good dreams only"
