BANGKOK: -- Min Buri Polytechnic Technology College teachers have handed over to police four of their students allegedly involved in the Tuesday gunfight at an intersection in Bangkok’s Nong Chok district with students from a rival school, said Metropolitan Police Bureau chief Pol Lt-General Sanit Mahathavorn on Thursday.

The four students surrendered on Wednesday at the Nong Chok precinct and police were considering charges of carrying guns in a public places, possessing guns and ammunition without permission and assault, Sanit said.

Teachers from Kanchanapisek Nong Chok Technical College also told police they would their three students involved in the brawl to police this week, he said.

The daring brawl led to one 16-year-old student being shot in the stomach by a rival’s gun and another gunshot wound in his thigh from his own gun accidentally going off.

The initial police probe found that the students from rival colleges were riding their motorcycles when they came upon each other in an intersection. Verbal taunting escalated into a brief gunfight.

As a short-term solution, Sanit said police have suggested that the colleges prohibit students from riding motorcycles to school and should provide school buses to transport them to and from school. A police car would lead the school buses.

Sanit also instructed Metropolitan Police Area 3 chief to investigate who started the fight. Punishment would be a sentence of up to six months in prison and a Bt60,000 fine as per a National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) order against instigating violence.
