VHS to DVD Transfers

I used to know 2 people who did VHS and Betamax to DVD transfers. Both were located in the old Icon Complex. One guy moved to Bangkok a few years ago and the other guy was still in operation until the building closed for re-construction. I've tried to contact him but his mobile number is closed and there is no response to email. I've asked around the new building and nobody seems to know him.

 

Does anyone know if there is still anyone around town who offers this service?

I made enquires and was advised that VHS where of low quality in terms of the number of 'Lines' used.

This was lower than UK TV was and that DVD could be made but would be of low quality fo reproduction.

Thanks. I went by there today (3rd Floor actually). Wow they are quite a bit more expensive than the place that was at Icon Plaza. Well, everything has gone up.....

 

They charge 350/hour. The guy estimated my job to be 2500 Baht. He says most tape cartridges that come in have mold on them and they have to be cleaned before he can transfer them - if even possible. That doesn't surprise me. We deal with the mold issue every year on other things.

 

jonwilly, I'm only looking to preserve some stuff for sentimental value. Quality is not such a concern.

About quality I felt the same. I had my old 16mm family movies digitized so the quality wasn't good to start with and preservation was the main concern.

 

The shop at Pantip that is against the wall up stairs  quote seemed expensive but I had some DVD to CD transfers done by the shop in one of the middle cubicles near by that sells copy games and movies. Nice guy and more reasonable.

Right, I'm looking to preserve some family movies and a few other things which I originally transferred from 8 mm to VHS or Betamax....always chasing new technology....

 

Yes, the shop I went to was against the wall in the far back. Hmmm.....when you say "DVD to CD transfers" I guess you mean VHS to DVD??? I had a good look around the 3rd Floor and didn't see any other shops that offered transfers from video cassette. I'll have to look again. The guy at the one shop did seem to know what he was talking about however. He said the video cassettes attract mold like a magnet and almost every video cassette that comes in from overseas that has been stored in Thailand for a while will have mold. They have to be carefully cleaned before he can make the transfer and it takes time. He said some can't be salvaged. Now I remember a friend in Bangkok would store his VHS tapes very carefully in individual bags with silica gel inside..... I had forgotten about that.

 

Well.....a google search certainly confirms the mold issue......

Yes VHS to CD, my apologies, I'd like to blame auto correct but .. on second thought it was auto correct fault :) . 

 

Not sure what your looking for or if can you can see anything pertaining to this service at the shop that did mine.

 

I suggest asking the shops in that area that sell copy games and movies.
