Thailand versus Philippines comparison video

The video doesn't mean much to me. I don't eat Thai food or Filipino food, so a comparison of the two is pointless to me. I eat western food, and it's way better in PI than in Thailand.

And safety, never seen any videos of gangs bashing foreigners in PI, but seen plenty of them happening in Thailand.

Infrastructure is certainly better in Thailand, roads are better, medical care APPEARS better, internet better, electricity more reliable.

Biggest problem is the exchange rate 66peso or 44bht for my British pounds ..... and the Baht and Peso have essentially the same buying power.

In the PI I have 50% more money, which makes it a lot cheaper than Thailand.

I've spent many years in both....I will not step foot in the PI unless there is a wedding or funeral I'd have to attend...

Two completely different places...Even my friends from there that visit here do not want to return....Many are making plans to retire here.....

I love these threads never see many trying to get those in the PI's to come to Thailand though. Seems like those that have done their dash in Thailand always praise the phillos. Had a house there for years due to work. Manila is the worst airport in the world as is commuting out of the capital. The bars are crap, the food is rubbish, the girls are crap (except for the top 10% who are beautiful but most expats wont be getting) the peso is better but accommodation and many other things are more expensive so in real terms your dollar travels further in thailand. Infastrucure is shit, guns and drugs are arguably a bigger problem in the PI's, the only redeeming quality is that most speak good english which is great for the old colonials that are too f@!*£ing lazy or expect the natives to speak proper english..you can have the Philippines its a shit hole just stop trying to convince the rest of us that live in Thailand that it is so much better. Just boot off and live there.

If I remember rightly last year you were slagging off Thailand and saying  how wonderful The Philippines was. Girls were great, could speak good English etc. And now you are back with your tail between your legs. 55555

Didn't watch the video, but have been to both places and Thailand wins out by a long shot. I often felt unsafe in PI and had a hard time finding food that was more than mediocre. On the other hand, I had more fun there than any place I've ever been, but that was because the people are so desperate, so felt guilty taking advantage of it. I pretty much never feel that way in Thailand.

PI must have the worst food in the world, can never remember having a decent meal there in many trips.

I understand what you mean but I Ihink it is wrong to say Filipino food is so bad, There are some excellent Filipiono dishes which are probably more suited to a Western palate than Thai food. The probelm i have found in the Phils (and i have spent quite a bit of time there now) is that a lot of restaurants tend to be very unreliable and the taste of pretty simple dishes can vary dramatically from the sublime to the disgusting. If you are travelling to the Phils and in a town for the first time you are undoubtedly likey to encounter some poor food. However when you know a place in Phils and you find good restaurants as MaeJo MTB says the food (particularly the Western food) is better quality and taste than in Thailand.

I dont think any need to get upset about the comparison. I believe many feel that Thailand is going through a difficult political time and there do appear to be continuing more stringent regulations affecting the entertainment industry which will definitely be a negative to some, especially if living in CM. Add to this the strength of the baht it is logical that alternatives may be sought The baht is 15% stronger against the pound since Brexit the Peso is the same as pre Brexit. The reality is that both Phils and Thailand are dirty places (never ever seen more rats than around the moat in CM) As far as crime and safety are concerned i certainly don't feel more at risk in Phils. Agree with the methodology being used or not, the drugs problem is being tackled head on in the Phils. On balance i think the main difference is that Thailand is a country going backwards, I sense the Phils is trying to move forwards.

Not upset at all if you think somewhere is better fine get there and excuse yourself from the forum. I don't go on Pivisa and rabbit on about how great Thailand is and if I didn't live here or spend a lot of time here  I wouldn't be on this forum at all.

The fact that this topic has been posted in various guises on Thai Visa suggests that there is an interest.  I personally have spent more time in Thailand than P'pinnes. If you think this topic is not appropriate on TV why not excuse yourself from this thread ?

Sensible comparisons between Thailand and nearby SE Asia countries are inevitable and can be informative. The grass frequently seems greener elsewhere so some hard information and contrasting experiences and viewpoints are useful. Please keep it coming re the PI, and try and specify locations helps if they are not all Angeles.

I tend to visit Barrretto, Olongapo, Zambeles as it has go-gos, nice beaches and a choice of places to eat western food and is only 240 peso on the Victory Line bus from  Pasay in Manila. More of a holiday destination, than a place to live. Just right for my 90 day VISA jumps. Never been to Clark (aka Angeles).

I have spent some period of time in Manila, Puerto Galera, Subic Bay, Cebu City, Bohol and have even ventured to General Santos in the deep South of Mindanao. Obviously everybody has different preferences for where they want to live from rural to urban but i have not felt threatened in any of the places above and across the board people are generally friendly. The number of armed security guards does seem quite alarming but i don't relate armed security guards to a place being 'dangerous'.

I was looking at Peurto Princesa and Camiguim Island for my next trip.

Nothing wrong with Baloy Long Beach in Barretto.

How do you rate the Subic area, bars, food, females, accomm??

Subic area = Barretto where all the action is. Bars are good, Cheap Charlies if you just want to chat and drink beer. Arizona and Mango if you want take outs. Avoid Paradise at all costs, they cheat you. Food at Arizona is first class, at least the Mexican food is. Breakfasts are good in many places, I like Johanns Dive bar on Baloy Long Beach because the sausages are tremendous. Dynamite Dick's is a nice little bar for drinking. Fish and chips and Aussie meat pies at the restaurant next to 'Flash Rat' are decent. So many places to eat with decent food, I must have missed loads.  Decent accommodation, near the beach with air-con around 1,000 pesos a night, 10% discount if you stay a week, 50% discount if you stay a month (Baloy Long Beach).

Thanks for that Mr M. I have spoken to many who have been to Angeles and a few from Subic. I did not realise it was so big. I have seen a list of 40 bars there, would they all be farang friendly? Baloy Long Beach sems a good deal, i take it that is the exception rather than the rule?

Thanks again

Only 2-3 bars for locals. The other 37 are all for foreigners, most of them run or operated by Americans or Australians. It isn't all that big (about 2Km form end to end), just packed with bars and resorts.

Apologies for the slow reply. I would echo most of what Maejo has said and Barretto is definitely the place to be if it is nightlife and food geared to Westerners  you are looking for. I personally think the beach is average and whilst i have swum in the sea i am far from convinced about it's cleanliness. If you like to swim there is a very nice 50m pool at the Wild Orchid Hotel, you pay 500 pesos to use it but you can then chose any drinks or food off the menu for the same amount. The majority of the bars on the strip are 'girlie bars' but standard bars can be found as well. Beer and women are probably as cheap as you are likely to find anywhere. Once you know where to go there are quite a few places that serve up very good food which is a big plus over other places i have been to in Phils. In addition to those mentioned by Maejo, DaBar is very good for food, Drydens is pretty good and Angels Bakery is very clean and pleasant place for breakfast or lunchtime snack. Shambolis is a small eat in place  good for pizzas and other pasta dishes (all the bars use them for ' delivery). I have only stayed in a few different hotels in Barretto but i think the best value for money one is the Coffee Shop, Roof Garden (opposite Arizona)  This place also has a restaurant which is very popular with the locals, food is OK and pretty good value.
