there are pain receptors all over the eye that are generically labeled "nociceptors" and are designed to detect injury. the white of the eye is not as sensitive to pain as is the cornea

 

thats why when you have "pink eye aka conjunctivitis" they first put topical anesthesia drops to take away pain-discomfort so the eye exam can be more easily facilitated
