(Reuters) - When the shooting began, some refused to believe a massacre was underway.

Country music singer Jason Aldean was in the middle of a guitar solo at an outdoor concert on the Las Vegas Strip on Sunday night and the sold-out crowd was enjoying the moment, unaware of the horror about to unfold.

"It's not real gunshots," one man yelled as panicked concertgoers around him ducked for cover. "It's the fireworks, fireworks! Guys, stop, stop."

The time was 10:07 p.m. (0507 GMT), the start of nearly two hours of terror before police would confirm that the gunman was down.

Police would eventually reveal that 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, armed with at least 10 rifles, fired into the crowd of 22,000 people from his 32nd floor room at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. At least 59 people were killed and 527 wounded in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

Disbelief quickly gave way to reality as volley after volley of rapid gunfire rained down on the Route 91 Festival.

"We got shots fired!" a Las Vegas police officer radioed in at 10:08 p.m. "It sounded like an automatic firearm."

The terrifying moments were recorded by many social media users. Reuters pieced together events based on verified video, police and other official statements, and reporters on the scene from the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

"I'm pretty sure a terrorist attack just happened next to me. I'm at Mandalay Bay," Las Vegas Twitter user @GLOKMIN tweeted early on in the assault.

Out on the streets, taxi drivers received word of the danger within minutes when an advisory of police activity came across the blue screens on their taxi meters.

"Drivers avoid LV Blvd and Tropicana. Active shooting from Mandalay Bay. Possible 3 shooters," the alert said at 10:25 p.m.

Minutes later, police ordered people to take cover inside the Mandalay Bay. "Even cabbies must exit their vehicles and go into hotel," LV Cabbie Chronicles tweeted at 10:28 p.m.

Half an hour after the shooting, police said on Twitter that they were investigating an active shooter, and people who did not flee rushed to help.

Citizens turned their private vehicles into ambulances, and others became on-the-spot medics, using metal crowd-control stanchions as stretchers.

"We have a head shot. We have a head shot," one man yelled in a video of volunteer medics at work.

Lindsay Lee, a self-described Las Vegas tattoo model, turned her truck into an ambulance when a man at the scene asked her to take victims to the hospital.

"Go ahead, put them all in the back," she said in one video.

Then came a moment that few volunteers could be prepared for.

"One died in the back of the truck and my fiance had to carry him inside the hospital," Lee said on Instagram. "This was a nightmare. I've never ran for my life like I did tonight."

A full 90 minutes after the shooting started, police were still ordering people on the street to get down and take cover.

Rachel Crosby, a reporter for the Review-Journal, saw events unfold from University Medical Center, the only Level 1 trauma centre in Nevada, where all the trauma beds were full.

"I have seen a handful of nurses jogging into front and back hospital entrances," Crosby tweeted. "I have seen a handful of citizens speed-walking away from trauma centre. Colour drained from faces."

The bloodshed took an obvious toll on hospital staff.

"Jesus," one nurse repeated over an over. Another nurse phoned a loved one, got on the ground, head down, and took deep breaths.

"More and more staff wearing scrubs keep filing in UMC entrances," Crosby said.

Police have yet to pinpoint when the deadly assault came to an end.

But finally, just short of two hours after the shooting began, came the first sign that the danger had passed.

"Confirming that one suspect is down," Las Vegas police tweeted at 11:58 p.m. "This is an active investigation. Again, please do not head down to the Strip at this time."

Its time America woke up to the fact that the greatest threat does not come from overseas in the form of Muslims or terrorists, but domestically from its insane firearm laws. Sadly, I fear that many more innocent lives will be lost before that message sinks in and the nations politicians have the balls to stand up to the gun lobby and reduce the level of arms out there. You should not be able to take 10 rifles into a hotel room, when the nearest wildlife is many many miles away.

RIP to the shockingly high number of dead.

When you have a culture that worships firearms, you are going to have massacres by crazy people.

A message to the US; if you stop the gun fetish, you'll have fewer tragedies like this.

It is that simple.

Most in the US don't worship firearms.  A few do, but very few like this guy.  His weapon seems to have been modified to be an automatic weapon.  It wasn't sold like that.

But yes, gun control is a big problem in the US.  Blame the NRA, special interest groups and a lousy government. LOL

The suspicion, based on initial reports, is that at least one of the rifles used was altered to function as an automatic weapon, the official said. Among the weapons found were a .223 caliber and a .308 caliber.

The greatest threat to America does not come from overseas or it's firearm laws. It comes from the government and that is why I, as an American who wants for the denuclearization of North Korea, refuse to give up my guns, or my right to carry guns.

My government is very good at being corrupt and not seeming so.

Dissent is NOT the Highest Form of Patriotism

I do not mean to speak ill of the dead. Howard Zinn has a well-deserved place in the hearts of all liberals. However, the aphorism refered to in the title is an unfortunate legacy of that good man, because it is patently untrue. Worse, I believe it has a corrupting influence on the liberal mindset.

one top news channel reported he had checked in last Thursday with 16 guns,at his home it was found he had a further 18firearms plus thousands of rounds of armunition, surely in this day and age in America there should be a security check with a metal detector.

I've never seen a hotel with a metal detector except in some really 3rd world countries.  Even then, not really.  Park your car in the lot, hide the weapons in a big bag.  Perhaps one used by musicians with upright basses.  Go up the elevator to your floor.  Done.  Sadly.

Yes it's a fact MSM is doing their regular coverup. However you are correct.  I have had some contact with my cousin in Vegas who is upper level Federal LE.  I think it's premature to comment on that right now though.

MSN are saying nothing different to any other network, all networks, the FBI, police, dem and rep congressmen are all saying the same thing. No muslims !!!

Yet somehow its an MSM coverup ????

just read an ozzie news post saying ISIS has claimed responserbility.

courier mail .

They claim responsibility for most mass shootings etc, even those committed by lone wolf Muslims. Its not like the Gunman (usually dead) can stand up and say otherwise.

No, most people have already seen through your government. That can only be your own badly updated vision of reality.

The gun law has to be changed before it gets any better in the United States of Ammunition. You, my dear man. You can refuse what you want. It´s the law that allows you to have your guns. If that change you can refuse how much you want.

Ban all automatic weapons!!! :annoyed:

Nevada alreay bans full autos. You'd need to ban semi-autos as well. This guy had two bumpstocks. Bumpstocks are legal. Here's some idea of what a bumpstock can do with a semi-auto AK74:
