A spokesman for the Department of Land Transport has said that Mor Chit 2 bus station in northern Bangkok will definitely be relocated.

A new bus station is expected to be built that will be next to Jatujak BTS.

Building is expected to start sometime next year.

And plans are also in place for four new bus stations at major cities around Thailand.

Chertchai Sanansrisakhorn was talking Tuesday about the DLT's five year transport plan, reported Sanook.

He said that a few minor hurdles remained as private companies were using the land at Jatujak but these were not expected to be a problem.

The land is owned by a government ministry.

Consultative measures were now being undertaken and these were expected to be completed by March of 2018. Thereafter building could begin.

Exactly how the building will look and the immediate traffic arrangements around the new bus station are all under discussion.

The five year plan also calls for new bus stations in Chiang Mai, Songkhla, Korat and Rayong.

Just, what is wrong with the existing terminal? Somebody found another bunch of money they not know what to do with?

Nothing, it is (or will be) actually ideally located for interchange with rail connections.

But some bright spark designed Bang Sue Grand station along with the SRT maintenance facilities (for the Red Line and long distance trains) on the assumption that the bus terminal would move.

The terminal moved to its current location "temporarily" when the BTS depot was built, the current move is actually back to its old location.

Temporarily??? That´s for me like a tent during a roof leak. Not a multi million contruction project. :cheesy:

Thanks for the information, though. It was a short and quick part of modern history that I managed to miss.

This article does not make any sense.

There is NO Jatujak BTS station.

There is a Morchit BTS station, and, at the same place, a Chatuchak (Jatujak ?) MRT station.

Close from them : a green park and and a car park (where Morchit but station was located 20 years ago). Too small to make a new bus terminal.

My guess : the new bus station will be built near a new BTS station (called ?) in the Chatuchak district.

Actually, if the plan is as originally cited the new bus station will go on top of the BTS depot back where it moved from "temporarily" 20 years back.

The depot structure was originally designed for a development to go on top which never happened, so there is no issue with structural strength. One assumes that the current Park and Ride will go by the board.

I thought they were going to move to Rangsit ?

Ancient history now I'm afraid, they couldn't get clearance to buy the land. Anyway the proposed location was miles from Rangsit SRT station (or anywhere else useful to connect in to town) it was never going to fly.

No. Just another Thai U-turn. Wasn't it brilliant to build a convenient railway to the bus station but in doing so they had to move the bus station to a place where it could produce massive traffic jams every evening as the only way to access it for the many thousands of passengers was by road.

Now the U-turn. Move it back to where the railway can serve it. If they can do that now, why did they move it in the first place (picture now embarrassed Thai smile)
