rooster59 Posted October 14, 2017 Posted October 14, 2017 Ubonrat Dam’s water discharge to reach 54 million cubic metres per day The committee for the management of water in Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham, Kalasin, Roi-et and Yasothon provinces have made a resolution to discharge more water from the Ubonrat Dam in Khon Kaen as the water flowing into the dam has reached 100 million cubic metres per day. Somsak Jangtrakul, the Khon Kaen governor, said the action is necessary to maintain the strength of the dam. In a meeting on Saturday (Oct 14), the committee agreed that from 12 am on Oct 14 the dam will release water at the rate of 42 mln cu/m per day. Michael Hare Posted October 15, 2017 Posted October 15, 2017 That is bad news for those of us who live down-country from the Ubonrat dam. The water will flow out of the dam down the Namphong river, into the Chi river and then into the Mun river. Here in Ubon we have experienced many times the flood damage caused by releasing water from the Ubonrat dam. The situation is still very serious from the July cyclone, with displaced people still living in tents along city roads. Up in Roi-et province there are still thousands of rai under water from the July cyclone causing the Chi river in many parts to break its banks. This dam-release water will only cause more suffering. Here in Ubon it will be interesting to see if Warin is cut off from Ubon city like it was in 1978, 2000, 2001 and 2002.
SweatySock Posted October 15, 2017 Posted October 15, 2017 The water level in the dam rose by 4 inches overnight Friday/Saturday. It is very close to overflowing.
The Deerhunter Posted October 15, 2017 Posted October 15, 2017 If they don't release the water the dam will.overflow or break, either way releasing possibly more water. Not many options available it would seem. The only option available would have been earlier on to release more. Fortunately for the PM no one ever complains about drought's if they result from letting too much water out too early in the wrong year. Oh hang on a minute. Didn't Yingkuk do that? A crystal ball would be a fine thing to have.
