Is Bangkok going to be dry on Friday

Although there is no official dry day, there are red light hotspots that will close "voluntarily" (just not interested to open with no booze and get caught?).

Also some places away from redlight close voluntarily.

 

Redlight:

Nana Plaza incl. bars in front on Soi 4 will be closed for three days (25 to 27).

Soi Cowboy closed for three days (25 to 27).

Patpong closed 25 and 26. Maybe also 27, seems still unclear.

 

Others:

Lumpini district: pubs, bars, restaurants no alcohol 25 to 27 (by police order, not saying closed).

Hard Rock cafe closed 26 (so open on Friday).

"The Club Khaosan" (?) closed 24 to 29 (!).

 

So it seems there might be places open on Friday while others closed.

True! I still had hoped for a beer with a m8, tomorrow. “Knew” about 26/27th to be dry but thought Wednesday might be a day where they’d still serve alc. Oh well...

Indeed!  I'd have wagered a definite ban on 26th.  Mind you, if last week was anything to go by, I would rule out the police announcing at 4pm on 26th that no-one can sell alcohol.

 

Given the reason for any bans that might happen I can fully understand it and wouldn't be bothered going out those days anyway.  What I do feel sorry for though, given that last week's no go would have been known about ages ago, was that the police announce the no go in the afternoon of the day and in some cases even after the ban started! Like screw all the people across Thailand who have had to get ready, traipse across town to work (in may cases) only to arrive and find their work place closed and have to go home again. Way to go.

It does outwardly seem that the authorities are being reasonably sensible, as it stands now, there doesn't appear to be a legal ban on the sale of alcohol..................yet.

Entertainment venues countrywide have been asked to show their respect and close / tone things down and most, sensibly, will do this, if they don't, then they really are fools.

Tomorrow I'll be amazed if any night entertainment venues, anywhere in the country, open at all, it would be extremely disrespectful to do so IMHO.

Shops that sell alcohol will self regulate, Seven and Tesco are closing for the 26th afternoon, so no sales there, Tops Market (at least in All Seasons Place) were not selling alcohol from yesterday so I believe, the mom and pop shops will probably do what they always do.

To sum it up, it looks like you can buy and drink alcohol for most of the period, just not in a bar / club environment, which again IMHO is being fair, they do not want folks to be openly enjoying themselves in the face of what, to the Thai people, is a very sad occasion, this is even more to the point in Bangkok, where it is closer to the event.

I have to say that after a lot of years living here, I'm more than (pleasantly) surprised that this much is being allowed.

So, are things relatively back to normal today in the downtown area? I happen to live close to pinklao and sanam luang so here obviously most things are dry and silent, which is perfectly fine, however I also happen to have visitors who came yesterday, so if any small waterhole around sukhumvit or silom is in business we would gladly like to know, some places do sell beer around khaosan and rambuttri, but it just feels very wrong to drink at all among all the mourners.
(EDIT - Yes, I know Seven etc. We were more thinking somewhere we can sit and have some food and a few brews).
