By The Nation

Chiang Rai police arrested a Hmong man on Wednesday night as he was allegedly smuggling 1 million methamphetamine pills from the border into the northern province's main city.

Songpor Sae-song, 34, a hilltribe man from Chiang Rai's Phaya Mengrai district, was arrested at a road checkpoint on the Thamluang National Park-Khunnam Nangnon Road in Ban Nam Jam village in Chiang Rai's Mae Sai district at 8.30pm.

Police stopped his pickup and found the drugs in a bag behind the driver's seat.

Songpor admitted he had been hired by a man to take the drugs from the border in Mae Sai to downtown Chiang Rai, where another man was supposed to pick it up.

He was promised Bt120,000 for a successful delivery.
