but from Chumphon to khao lak there are 3 ways to get to khao lak which shown in google map !

soo.. which way is the best and safer for self -drive..?  1. Chumphon --Ranong--khao lak (shorter) 2- Chumphon--? not shown 3. Chumphon --surathani -khaolak ?(25 km more far)

Years ago , I did all three . The easy one from Chumphon to Surat (41) and then the "new" road (44) to Khao Lak is uneventfull (all palm oil) , besides the bad state of the 2x2 road from CH to S , but you can stop easily to go to coast towns and some parallel roads .

The 401 from Surat to Phanga is more dangerous but sometimes spectacular !

Chumpon to Ranong to Khao Lak is more scenic but often a 1x1 road , but that might have changed. Since Ranong is one of the wettest provinces , the road has suffered .

The 4006 is a small road but nice enough , I def do it again and it is a shortcut .

Quickest is to stay on the N-S Highway as far as Surat Thani then head west.

Weird that nobody gives up to date info about road works along the 3 to 4 ways to get to Khao Lak. And you know Thailand ... there are always some roadworks from bad pothole filling to laying new stretches of severely damaged roads/highways .
