Huge crowds float away their troubles at Loy Krathong celebrations in Bangkok

Thais came out in their thousands last night to celebrate the festival of Loy Krathong in the Thai capital.

One of the most popular spots in the northern part of the city were the grounds of Kasetsat University where there are large lakes.

Crowds of walkers were virtually at a standstill as they tried to get to vantage points on the lakes to float their boats made from banana trunk and leaves and bread.

Thais light a candle and incense and believe they are floating away their troubles on the little boats known as "krathong". "Loy" means float in Thai.

University students at Kaset joined with many members of the public in celebrating the festival last night as the full moon shone down on the happy gathering.

Bangkok was more dead/ quiet than the past 15 Loy Krathongs. The Chao Phraya was dead compared to other years, Lumpini had more but still quiet, the main klong San Saeb quiet.

It's because the government said celebrate too heartily and we'll throw you in jail...just a few days ago. Can't have it both ways. Everyone is burnt out...black for a year, then celebrate...oh but still not too much and oh yeah....about those elections....

The BTS and Sathorn Pier were crazy last night...quite a few boats on the river.

Sathorn pier is busy every Friday night as is the BTS. That is the pier that has the free connection to Asiatique  and the BTS connection. No busier than it will be next Friday. Go check it out. There are boats always on the river. I know owners of a few dinner cruise boats. One had 50 customers and other years 200.  It was dead last night. Even the main topic from Mr Rooster says Bangkok was busy yet the article and pic have no reference to Bangkok at all!! Did he step out of his home last night due to his shirt being a little burnt several years ago?? Probably not.

Benchasiri park was a nightmare as was Phom Phong BTS. It took the best part of 10 minutes to climb the stairs to the station it was so busy. Maybe people went about it more locally rather than traveling so far.

Nice to see the kids dressed in traditional costumes and having fun. I was glad to find my own sanctuary tho. The Robin Hood.
