I give up! Tried putting the movie and the subtitles in the same folder, renaming the subs, not renaming the subs, nothing works. I'm probably doing something wrong, but what? Thanks for all the suggestions and help. Cheers!

That info is as wrong as it can be.

...

The subtitle should then be

Big.Movie.2017.srt ,(without the .en)

Actually if I have subtitle files with or without and additional language id in them that is not in the movie file name the subtitles still display OK on my player (vlc).

Obviously something not working. I have a 3 year old Samsung smart flatscreen that has no problem playing .srt subs. I know this does not help you but shows it should be possible. On my TV the Subs option is ON by default but Subs language needs to be selected. Is English your selected Language?

I presume you put the movies on a USB flash drive to play on your TV. This is what I do and I always change the name to just the Movie NOT the long download name. So  "24 Hours to Live. 2017.WEB-DL.x264-FGT.mp4." becomes  "24 Hours to Live". You don't need to add the filename  ".mp4" this will be there automatically. I also remove all the full stops, so "24.Hours.to.live." becomes "24 Hours to Live"

As stated The Subs file has to have exactly the same name as the movie file and be in the same folder. So on your USB flash drive you should have the movie folder and in that folder should be two files  "24 Hours to Live" .mp4 and  "24 Hours to Live" .srt. (without the "" thingies.)

Thanks, will give it another try. My Panasonic TV won't play movie files through the USB port, only photos, that's why I have the Media Player.

I'm a little confused how I would place the movie and the subtitles in a folder. Do you use qBittorrent?

Maybe I don't quite understand but you should COPY the movie from the qBittorrent location to a new folder on your USB flash drive and rename the movie and subs file in that folder. Then use that folder to play your movie.

Just another thought, do you have a direct LAN connection from your computer into the TV.

If so you could try a neat little free program - http://serviio.org/download - that lets you play, movies music and photos on the TV directly from the computer.

Just a thought.

No, TV bedroom, computer lounge room.

Yes, but the subs are normally just named English, so the name has to be changed to same as the movie.

First of all a movie can not have the MKV extension, because MKV is a container not a format.

Just to elaborate on that a little bit so all can understand...

What Are MKV Files?

Contrary to popular belief, MKV files are not an audio or video compression format. MKV files are actually multimedia container formats. An MKV container can incorporate audio, video, and subtitles into a single file—even if those elements use different types of encoding. For example, you could have a MKV file that contains H.264 video and something like MP3 or AAC for audio.

MKV container files were designed to be future proof, meaning that the files would not become outdated. Matroska developers included several key features to make this happen, including things like:

  • Fast seeking
  • Chapter, menu, and metadata support
  • Different selectable audio and video streams
  • Online streaming compatibility
  • Subtitle (hard-coded and soft-coded) support
  • Error recovery, which allows for playback of corrupted files

The MKV container itself also supports almost any audio and video format, making the format highly adaptive and easy to use.

It does play them. and there is a SubT button. If you go into the OSD you can also find if subtitles are included. Actually, looking at the model again, mine is slightly different than that. I can see the model I've shown doesn't seem to have a Sub button.

You must have the subtitle file (.srt) in the same folder/directory as the video file and it must have exactly the same name.

For example:

Capture_01.JPG

After that you should be able to get a picture with subs like this:

Thanks, that's what I always thought was the way, but it seems my media player isn't recognising the subs for some reason.

After all that seems your media player does not support Subs :shock1:

The answer obviously is to buy a new media player but in the meantime you could play around with the free VidCoder program - http://vidcoder.net/ - that will let you burn-in subs which it seems your player does support.

VidCoder.jpg.a93f5246921705a2710dcfb44336db62.jpg

Load the movie file into VidCoder - click on Subtitles EDIT - in the new window select "Import .srt File" and choose "Burn In" - Click - "Encode"

A new file of the movie will be made with subs burnt in.

Easier really to buy a new media player but something to play with in the meantime.

Sorry, but I have played movies with subs many times with this player. I'm only having the problem because I changed from uTorrent to qBittorrent which seems to have all the subs attached just as "English" whereas uTorrent had them already matched with the same same as the movie. The remote has a sub button, that's not just there for show, and it also shows the subs (if any) on the OSD.

I really don't understand why qTorrent files should be any different,  I always thought a Torrent  file was the same no matter what client was used

If the problem started when you changed clients why not just go back to uTorrent and your problem will be solved.

I have been using uTorrent 2.2.1 (build25302) for years, ever since I discovered Torrents and never had a problem with it. Some people are using even earlier versions and like me would not upgrade to any later version.

The later versions are buggy and bloated so if you go back to uTorrent go for an early version.
