Two killed after taxi crashes into expressway pillar

By The Nation

A taxi driver and his female passenger were killed when his vehicle crashed into a pillar on an elevated expressway and caught fire early Friday morning.

A witness heard the woman crying in pain but he could not rescue her as the taxi's doors were locked and the taxi was quickly engulfed in flames.

Pol Lt Col Thinnakorn Wannakul, deputy inspector at Bang Plad police station, was informed of the accident on the frontage road along Bang Plad gate to the Sriraj expressway at 2.30am.

When he arrived at the scene, firefighters were trying to put out the blaze. It was finally put under control 30 minutes later.

Two charred bodies were found - one behind the driver’s seat and the other in the back left passenger seat.

The taxi driver was identified as Thongchan Patikha, 49, from Kalasin. His driver's ID card and his mobile phone were not damaged. Police used his phone to inform his family.

But the woman could not be identified as her clothes and identification cards were all burned.

One witness, Boonruang Dokchampa, 57, said he heard the crash, ran over and saw the taxi starting to catch fire.

He also heard the woman crying in pain but he could not get to the vehicle as the fire took hold.

And there we were thinking that cars only crash and explode in Hollywood movies?

I am pretty sure that converting a car to LNG and CNG requires the parts to be from registered suppliers and installed by registered businesses. Given the prevalence of these fuel alternatives and the government's encouragement to adopt them, I am also confident that there's a government agency tasked with inspecting and licensing both equipment manufacturers and the installers. In light of these obvious safeguards, I am honestly at a loss as to why so many vehicle accidents in Thailand result in victims dying in these infernos.

I mean if people wanted to die a horrible fiery death, surely they only need to go to some Bangkok nightclubs?

I used to bring my children in taxi before i bought a car, this gives me nightmares. Nowdays i only travel by taxi a few times per year, every time is indeed a nightmare.

I very rarely use taxis and NEVER minivans here. That's why I''m still alive!

No one said that the taxi exploded.

"I am honestly at a loss as to why so many vehicle accidents in Thailand result in victims dying in these infernos".

Inertia has a lot to do with it, something that proper installations cannot always overcome.

I am never happy when drivers lock the doors of a car or taxi before taking off.

I can't see that it achieves anything, unless the locals think that the doors are closed more securely.

those road crossing pillars are mighty dangerous.

The doors on our car automatically lock when car is put in gear. If it bothers you, you can always unlock your door manually.
