centipede sting

Featured Replies

I realise there have been a few of these sorts of posts over the years but thought I'd start my own. On  the 10th of September about 7.30 at night during a blackout I went out side to feed my dogs. Something nipped me on my second toe and there were two puncture points roughly the width of the toe apart. I went to the hospital as I thought it may have been a snake (i didn't see whatever it was). They did nothing as couldn't be sure what it was. I spent a night there in absolute agony but in the morning the pain died off and I went home. Some two months later I still have a  swollen inflamed toe and as I am back in OZ for the moment I consulted first a GP who tried, antibiotics, steroid cream, anti inflammatories, and fungal treatments. To be fair it is less inflamed and swollen now, I think that was due to the anti inflammatories. Anyway I now have a specialist physician on the case and he is getting an MRI and a culture grown (treated me for nothing). My Thai family and friends were reasonably sure it was a centipede, the large and fairly aggressive variety, based on  the symptoms. However the specialist and I would like to know how long serious symptoms last as it may be that I have something else going on. Any other member had a similar experience and can give timeframes of recovery would be greatly appreciated.

It's been known for discomfort/pain to last a month or more.

Apparently in OP's case it has been 2 months and counting

A scorpion would nto  leave 2 puncture marks, that sounds more like a snakebite.

Sometimes there is little or no envenomation, just the puncture.Or could be a nonvenomous snake,

Nonvenomous snakes also a possibilility as they too may also bite.

My guess is this is cellulitis secondary to a snakebite with no or only minimal local enevenomation

Treatment for post-snakebite cellulitis needs to cover both aerobic and anerobic organisms as snakes have both in their mouths. Suggest to your doctor broad spectrum antibiotic plus  metrondiazole or other to cover anaerobes.

Hi Sheryl

When I see the Doctor again shortly, I will pass on your advice. However just to reiterate I said centipede not scorpion, hence I think they have a pair of sharp points at one end. The improvement noted about half way through what is now nearly 3 months has plateaued and still today there is weeping and inflammation, though I stress not from the puncture sites which have completely healed

thanks

Now after more than 5 months, still experience bouts of pain ie this morning, swelling is still visible as also a bit of redness. I did take antibiotics, the first lot prescribed by the hospital and two courses from the Doctor. The complication is that there was already something wrong with this toe, sort of numbness. The centipede had 10 to choose from and stung the one with the preexisting problem
