Regarding Thai citizenship, there is the point about employment and minimum monthly salary that I find a bit ambiguous.

Quote

  • If living in Thailand for “reasons of humanity” such as being marriage with a Thai people or having a Thai-born child or having graduated from a university in Thailand, he or she must have an income of at least 30,000 baht a month and be able to prove that he or she has paid taxes in Thailand for at least three years.
  • He or she must have lived in Thailand contunously for at least five years before applying.

To be eligible, you need to live at least five years in Thailand and also work during that time, with a minimum amount to earn each month. However, does this mean that you have to have worked every single month of the 5 years, and also having made the minimum salary for every month of those 5 years?

For example, after working 4 years at a Thai company, it closes and you are left jobless.

- What if you find a job (that is also willing to provide a work permit), but only after 1 month and a week?

- If you do find a job, what if you don't make the minimum salary during that month (since you were looking for a new job)? Would it invalidate eligibility?

Also, most importantly, if the things previously mentioned do invalidate eligibility, in theory, would this mean having to restart the whole 5 years from scratch?

The info on that link was posted in 2004 for. Things have changed a lot since then. The nationality act has been amended twice since then.

The part about 30k baht income even then was incorrect since that was a requirement for permanent residency. At that time there was no special provision for being married to a Thai lady,

If married it is 40k baht of income for 3 years proven by tax payments and on extension of stay for those 3 years.

The latest requirement are here. Guidelines and documents required for application for Thai citizenship by naturalization

You should also have a look at this topic.

I do have all the requirements except the job with work permit and the 3 years tax. Is so difficult to look for job in Thailand as a foreigner. Really hope that the law can change and make it more easy for foreigners who have Thai wife with own kids to apply for the Thai citizens.

If you have a bachelor's degree, you can walk into a teaching job any day of the week. It may not be a good job, but there are many average jobs around.

Do these teaching or "average jobs" for someone who "walks into" them offer the minimum income (baht 40,000 ??) per month  that is apparently required?

I realize Baht 40,000 isn't that much, but the sort of things on offer to people who walk in off the street may fall short of that and may not provide the required record of tax payments or any certainty of continued employment.

Is that possible to make Non B visa and work permit for teaching without bachelor degree? I have a associate degree.

They will want to see those Thai tax returns as well.  No getting around that requirement.

I agree. However, if someone is dedicated enough, and is willing to endure 5 years of lots of work, a second job might be an option to get to the 40,000 ฿ a month.

Earning 40,000 THB as a TEFL teacher is not an easy task when you live upcountry. It's even much more difficult to earn that when you're a non-native speaker of English.

Even 1 month break without work and you start the three years over again.

Also you can't use a multi entry visa O/B whatever as they look at it as 3 months at a time. It has to be 3 years working on extensions of stay to be considered continuous.

That's more complicated. The normal requirement is to have a minimum of bachelor's degree to get the work permit. Teacher's at my school all need a bachelor's degree to get the work permit.

Yes, it's much more difficult to get 40K "officially" from schools up-country. It's sad that salaries have really not increased that much in 15 years here....25K to 30K starting salary, for example.

You can get a work-permit with a Non-B Visa or a Non-O Visa based on marriage - or an "extension of stay" based on employment or marriage to a Thai .  But, the qualifications for the work permit are the same with either Visa or extension of stay.

One advantage of being married to a Thai, is that your "extension of stay" based on marriage to a Thai would not end the same day your employment ends.

Another advantage of being married to a Thai is regards the capital needed to start your own family-business (owned by you and your wife) and (at some offices) reducing the number of Thais your family-business would need to hire, before you could qualify for a work-permit to work at your own business (2 Thai employees vs 4).

No "degree" is needed to qualify to work for your own business, but you would need to have a position in the business for which you are qualified.  If your business was a small school, you might still not qualify for a work-permit as a teacher, due to the lack of a Bachelors degree - but you might be able to hire yourself as a supervisor based on prior-experience.

To reiterate what others have told you, it depends on the job you will be doing. The Labor Department is uninterested in whether you are single, married, divorced, have children or anything else except their published rules. For a teacher, there are specific requirements that must be met that depend to some extent on the type of institution you will be teaching at.

Get some proper qualifications and it will be a lot easier.

The degree is the main requirement for teaching, but you could get a WP based on other kinds of employment - like if you have your own business.

I got it so even you are married with Thai and have Non 0 visa associate's degree doesn't working for teaching you need bachelor degree.
