Bangkok Mass Transit Authority has suspended the installation of cash boxes on 1,800 public buses after it has found out that the cash boxes which were equipped in 800 buses for a trial run did not function properly.

An informed source said that Mr Natthachart Charuchinda, the board chairman of the city bus operator, had ordered a stop to the installation of the cash boxes in the remaining 1,800 buses.

As for the 800 buses which were already equipped with the boxes, the source said that BMTA would negotiate with the Ch Thavee Company, which was contracted to install the cash boxes and E-ticket system on 2,600 buses at a cost of 1,665 million baht to change the terms of the contract.

That's about par for the course. 1,665 Million for something that doesn't work properly and with the new "spider" ticket that covers all travel on buses and trains, will be obsolete by the time they fix the problem. Incompetency is clearly alive and doing well, though at 640,000 Baht per bus to install this non functioning crap, you have to say that corruption is doing pretty well also.

So, are these boxes to replace conductors? So who will help the elderly up the steep steps, or passengers with bags? Who will answer questions about routes?

Do the passengers queue to pay via the machine, in which case the bus can't leave before everyone has paid? That will more than double the travelling time on popular routes.

Who does it in civilized countries anyways?

The cash boxes have been in use since the 60's--70's back in most western countries.

Time for Thailand to get in stride with the times.

I don't know what you mean by civilized countries, too many of them have been involved in mass murder in wars but I'll accept developed. In most of those countries buses are not crammed like they are here. Most folks go by underground train or private car.

"Technical problem has occurred with the cash boxes during the peak hours with the boxes appear to be unable to accommodate with too many coins during the peak hours."

Bring back the conductors during peak hours?

Tie a bag at the back of the box to catch overflow of coins?

Let overflow spill onto bus floor?

Close bus doors when box full?

Let's think.
