Guatemala to move embassy to Jerusalem, backing Trump

GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) - Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales said on Sunday he had given instructions to move the Central American country's embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, a few days after his government backed the United States in a row over the city's status.

In a short post on his official Facebook account, Morales said he decided to move the embassy from Tel Aviv after talking to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday.

This month U.S. President Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, reversing decades of U.S. policy and upsetting the Arab world and Western allies.

The status of Jerusalem is one of the thorniest obstacles to forging a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians, who want East Jerusalem as their capital.

The international community does not recognise Israeli sovereignty over the entire city, home to sites holy to the Muslim, Jewish and Christian religions.

On Thursday, 128 countries defied Trump by backing a non-binding U.N. General Assembly resolution calling for the United States to drop its recognition of Jerusalem.

Guatemala and neighbouring Honduras were two of only a handful of countries to join the United States and Israel in voting against the resolution on Jerusalem.

The United States is an important source of assistance to Guatemala and Honduras, and Trump had threatened to cut off financial aid to countries that supported the U.N. resolution.

Morales, a former television comedian with an important base of conservative Christian support, earlier this year became embroiled in a bitter spat with the United Nations when a U.N.-backed anti-corruption body in Guatemala tried to impeach him.

Although Morales avoided impeachment, he failed in an attempt to expel the head of the body, the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala, after criticism from the United Nations, the United States and the European Union.

Israel is the only county in the world that has no officially nominated  capital city, and it took 70 years for a man with balls such as president Trump to right the wrong,  judging from many feedback on this subject, it's very clear that the world is worried and afraid of the Arab's world

wreath and retaliations, including acts of terrorisms, is this the kind of world we like to live in?....

Seriously impressed that you think trump is an uber male :shock1::laugh:.

Personally, I think he's a wealthy idiot - overcome with a belief in his own (especially now he's backed by the USA's) power.

Guatemala?  Who cares :saai:...

This makes poking a hornet's nest a wise move.

What're they gonna do for an encore; hold a burn the Qur'an day

That's a false equivalency. It is not as if anything to do with Jerusalem directly relates to religion. Not every piece of real estate in town is sacred, sanctified or whatever.

Actually what is wrong if some countries move to Jerusalem?

Why can't they is there no empty places in the city to build any

new buildings? Maybe it is time!

Geezer

As for why it's "wrong", there were enough topics detailing the legal issues. Even ignoring or minimizing that, it is hard to justify these moves as promoting peace process related efforts. No idea what was the point regarding free real estate about.

Know what you mean.

Trump's declaration has caused no controversy whatsoever....

To look on the bright side -no-one cares about Guatemala.

Don't know what is meant by "officially nominated". Israel declared Jerusalem to be its capital long ago. If the above was about international recognition, then not quite the same thing. Trump's announcement does not change Israel's definition of Jerusalem as its capital, nor does it changes the world's take on the matter. The USA (or POTUS, whatever) making such a statement doesn't make it "official" beyond USA policy and stance.

it is interesting that the biggest group of disenfranchised Palestinians in Jerusalem are in fact Christians. But I guess for most it is ok as they are just Arabs.

Just a different tribe from the Israelis

Christians represent about 1.5% of the total population in Jerusalem.

Trump's announcement is controversial, but spinning it as a religious issue is off mark. That it's bound to be used this way by some parties and posters is a given.

Did anyone spin it as a religious issue?

At least two of the posts above, to which I replied. Other than that, some Arab and Muslim leaders certainly tried. May wish to review previous topics.

Rubbish.  It's only you that is trying to spin this thread into your version of a 'religious' issue.

Just to remind you, this thread is about Guatemala endorsing trump's incendiary decision....

Rubbish how? There was one post equating Trump's announcement with burning Qurans, and another about Palestinian Christians in Jerusalem. I did not "spin" anything. Rather, it is you trying to pick an argument over nothing. Why am I not surprised...?

Would you prefer to live in a world where occupation and oppression of the indigenous population occurs, or where extrajudicial killings occur with impunity, or where children are arrested and beaten, then tried in a military court without legal representation or having their parents permitted to be present?

Do not try and portray the Israelis as the good guys, the victims who are being attacked by evil Arabs.

I am not sure what you mean by "afraid of the Arab's world wreath"-afraid of flowers???:cheesy:

Quite telling there are posters who consider a country that has over 4x as large a population, doesn't engage in terrorism, doesn't have a mandate calling for genocide, and receives far less handouts to be unimportant.

Perhaps it's because the country is pro rather than anti?
