Crime Drunken American Throws Rock through Window in Pattaya Over E-Cigarette Dispute

A street brawl erupted in Soi 11, (Soi Honey), Pattaya Second Road, around 21:00 on 27 May, after an intoxicated American man reportedly became aggressive when he was unable to purchase an e-cigarette at a local cannabis shop. According to eyewitnesses, the visibly drunk man entered the cannabis dispensary and persistently asked to buy an e-cigarette, which the shop does not sell. When staff repeatedly declined his requests, a heated argument ensued. The man then exited the premises and began shouting profanities in front of the shop, making obscene gestures, and sarcastically wishing the staff wealth. Matters escalated when the foreigner picked up a rock and hurled it at the shop’s window, shattering the glass. Despite attempts by a friend to restrain him, the man refused to calm down. The incident took another turn when an unidentified local youth, seemingly fed up with the man’s behaviour, ran towards him and began punching him, triggering a scuffle. The fight quickly attracted a crowd, with bystanders cheering as the situation descended into a public spectacle. Eventually, some members of the public intervened to separate the parties involved. As tensions simmered, the American man reportedly began arguing with another passerby, believed to be of Indian descent and was once again struck during a brief altercation. The owner of the cannabis shop, who reported the incident to the police, clarified that the young man who assaulted the foreigner was not affiliated with the business. She stated that the youth had likely been provoked by the man’s disruptive and disrespectful behaviour, as shown in widely circulated video footage of the incident. Police have since taken the American, who they have not named and suffered facial injuries, into custody on charges of property damage. The Bantadthong Association reports a dramatic revenue drop of 40-50% for restaurants on this famed street. The decline is primarily attributed to weak domestic spending and a slump in Chinese tourism, which usually makes up 20-30% of daily visitors. Sittichan Vuttipornkul, the adviser for the Bantadthong Association, highlights that while the cost of ingredients and rent is climbing steadily at 5% annually, consumer spending is lagging. Compounding the issue is the drop in domestic tourism spending since early 2025, with some restaurants witnessing as much as a 70% dip from last year. Negative online reviews, citing overpriced and lacklustre food, also deter potential customers. Yet, there's a ray of hope in the form of lower rental costs. Around 80-90% of businesses rent directly from Chulalongkorn University at a lower rate of 350 baht per square metre, contrasting sharply with 700 to 1,000 baht in shopping malls. High aspirations for quick profit by some new restaurateurs haven't panned out, leading the association to contemplate discussions on sustainable business practices. Despite these challenges, Banthat Thong remains a vibrant culinary hub. Named the 14th coolest street globally by Time Out magazine, it plays host to more than 300 dining spots, ranging from well-established eateries to new ventures like Haab, known for its Thai egg pastries. Interestingly, the street continues to draw significant foot traffic — 10,000 to 30,000 visitors daily back in 2024. With a low closure rate of just 2-3%, there remains demand for investment. The Bantadthong Association envisions transforming this iconic street into a premier tourist hotspot for street food and lifestyle experiences. There's a clear focus on diversifying the customer base beyond the younger crowd with limited spending power. Future plans include collaborative activities with other businesses, aiming to attract visitors of all ages. Report Thai Police Launch Helmet Crackdown to Boost Road Safety
Unlikely. And how would that work, video evidence etc? Thais are largely apathetic, don’t like snitching (rightly fear of retribution) and the police wouldn’t have the resources or be bothered even. The helmet hullabaloo comes around regularly, as does the license thing, but rarely makes a dent and people go back to norm.
