The 5,000 cherry trees at Chiang Mai’s Royal Agricultural Station Angkhang will be in full bloom just in time for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Station chief Thanawuth Nakham said on Friday the sakura blossoms had begun appearing mid-month and the spectacle would continue into mid-February.

Visitors are asked not to pluck the flowers from the trees so that everyone can enjoy the beautiful scene.

Despite occasional rainfall and temperatures as low as 12 degrees Celsius, tourists are flocking to the station every weekend, Thanawuth said.

There is enough parking space for 1,200 cars, he said, estimating that at least 20,000 people will visit during the New Year Festival.

The 48-year-old agricultural station also has plantations of tea and strawberries and grows winter fruit and vegetables.
