Trump breaks with Bannon, says former aide 'lost his mind'

Steve Bannon referred to Donald Trump, Jr's June 2016 meeting with a group of Russians "treasonous" and "unpatriotic," according to quotes in a new book on the Trump Administration, drawing a withering retort from President Trump. Justin Mitchell reports.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump on Wednesday blasted former White House adviser Steve Bannon as having "lost his mind" in the fallout over damaging comments Bannon made about Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., in excerpts of a new book.

Trump, who had continued to speak privately with Bannon in the months after firing him as the White House chief strategist last August, essentially cut ties with Bannon at least for now in a blistering statement issued after Bannon's comments about Don Jr. came to light.

"Steve Bannon has nothing to do with me or my presidency. When he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind," Trump said in a statement.

Trump had relied heavily on Bannon, chairman of right-wing news website Breitbart News, for advice in the months leading up to the November 2016 election that Trump unexpectedly won. Bannon helped Trump shape a populist, anti-establishment message and has been the president's link to his conservative base of support.

In excerpts of the forthcoming book, Bannon called a June 2016 meeting with a group of Russians at Trump Tower in New York arranged by the president's son and attended by top Trump campaign officials "treasonous" and "unpatriotic."

While in the past Trump has praised Bannon for his friendship, in his statement on Wednesday he said Bannon had little to do with his presidential victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton, calling him "a staffer who worked for me" after he had already won the Republican nomination.

Trump said Bannon was to blame for the loss of a Republican-held U.S. Senate seat in Alabama in December when Republican Roy Moore, whose campaign was derailed by accusations of sexual misconduct with teenage girls, lost to Democrat Doug Jones. During the campaign, Trump joined Bannon in backing Moore.

"Now that he is on his own, Steve is learning that winning isn't as easy as I make it look. Steve had very little to do with our historic victory, which was delivered by the forgotten men and women of this country. Yet Steve had everything to do with the loss of a Senate seat in Alabama held for more than thirty years by Republicans," Trump said.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who had despaired over Trump's backing of Moore at the urging of Bannon, was clearly pleased that Trump was now willing to rid himself of the former aide. McConnell's campaign organization tweeted an image of the normally taciturn McConnell with a beaming smile.

Trump, an expert at self-promotion, said Bannon was trying to promote himself by "leaking false information to the media to make himself seem far more important than he was."

"Steve was rarely in a one-on-one meeting with me and only pretends to have had influence to fool a few people with no access and no clue, whom he helped write phony books," said Trump, who famously values loyalty in associates and employees.

With midterm elections looming in November that could cost Republicans control of Congress, Trump praised Republican lawmakers and candidates, words likely to be welcomed by McConnell and House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan.

"Like me, they love the United States of America and are helping to finally take our country back and build it up, rather than simply seeking to burn it all down," Trump said.

As with much in the Trump White House, the story that triggered the harsh back and forth was an offshoot of the investigation into whether Trump campaign aides colluded with Russia to sway the election to Trump over Clinton.

Bannon expressed derision and astonishment over the June 2016 in which a Russian lawyer was said to be offering damaging information about Clinton, according to the book "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House" by Michael Wolff. The book is due to be released on Tuesday.

The meeting was attended by Trump's son, his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and then-campaign chairman, Paul Manafort. Bannon also was quoted as saying he was sure Trump Jr. would have taken the Russians who took part in the meeting to meet his father in Trump Tower.

"The three senior guys in the campaign thought it was a good idea to meet with a foreign government inside Trump Tower in the conference room on the 25th floor - with no lawyers. They didn't have any lawyers," Bannon said in the book in excerpts seen by Reuters.

"Even if you thought that this was not treasonous, or unpatriotic, or bad shit, and I happen to think it's all of that, you should have called the FBI immediately."

When an intermediary proposed the meeting, saying the Russians were offering damaging information about Clinton, Trump Jr. responded in an email, "I love it."

Bannon was incredulous about the meeting shortly after it was revealed, according to the book, concluding sarcastically, "That's the brain trust they had."

The Wolff book, parts of which were published by New York Magazine, portrayed Trump as shocked that he won the election and said his wife, Melania Trump, was in tears, and "not of joy."

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders called the book "trashy tabloid fiction" with false and misleading accounts.

The first lady's spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, added: "The book is clearly going to be sold in the bargain fiction section. Mrs. Trump supported her husband's decision to run for President and in fact, encouraged him to do so. She was confident he would win and was very happy when he did."

I suspect that this is true; I have always thought that what Trump wanted was the result that Hillary got. He wanted to win the popular vote while losing the Electoral College so that he could criticize from the sidelines without having any responsibility. Instead, he got his (and our) worst nightmare; he has the responsibility and clearly no real sense of how to do the job.

I feel very sorry for Melania; I have no idea what she is like, but I do believe that she didn't want to be First Lady.

The world is suffering because Donny boy's fragile ego was hurt a few years ago by some comedians, and in getting his 'revenge', he has put himself in a position of power for which he is clearly not qualified nor competent. We are all paying a terrible price for that arrogance.

On the positive side, if this is the end of Steve Bannon, that is a good thing.

I have said it before and (sadly) will say it again;

Donald Trump is an ever-expanding cloud of toxic waste which defiles everything it touches.

God help us all.

It's just his go to response when he feels like someone is trying to get back at him. Bannon was a major force in getting Trump elected, he was the puppet master behind the scenes (the shadow president, as some media called him), so it means a little something that Bannon now comes out and calls it treason that Trump jr. and Manafort were so eager to meet with that Russian woman to get the dirt on Hillary. Go Mueller!!

This Wolff book is all over the news....and it hasn't even been released yet.  Excerpts are incredibly revealing, and in a very negative way for Trump and his family.  So naturally, Trump is already blasting Bannon big-time.  Wonder who has more credibility, Bannon or Trump?  Trick question.  I can't stand Bannon, but I'd believe him before serial liar Trump.  Pretty sure most of America feels the same.

I'm afraid you're right, but tangerine 45 is still in power, no matter how much the majority of Americans hate his guts and want to see him being escorted out of the white house in handcuffs.

but when you're

the president, you can say and do ALMOST anything....

Only in the minds of people like yourself and other Trump supporters. Most people consider that there is one law and that everyone is equal under that law, and Trump should be accountable for what he says and does. What Trump has completely forgotten is that he SERVES the people, he is paid by the people and Governs for the people. But as it says in the Wollf book, Trump wouldn't know that, the guy that tried to explain the constitution to Trump after he was elected had to give up after a short while as Trump was maxed out after a few minutes.

The fact that Trump has turned on Bannon could be the real start to his downfall. I am sure Bannon has all the dirt on Trump and will not be afraid to dish it out and after the revelations over the last few days that Bannon considers Trump Jr was guilty of treason I am sure Mueller will want to have a chat over tea and biscuits........before the chat without tea and biscuits! It seems the Trump empire will collapse from within. This is actually Bannon's dream chance of totally destroying the Republican party. I wonder how Hannity is going to spin this one? Maybe Fox will report that Bannon was actually a HRC plant and they have a secret love child together....who was adopted by Mueller.....whatever it is, it will be tweeted verbatim by Trump sometime soon.

Extremely dirty characters, Trump and Bannon, tackling each other -what a wonderful theme for a gangster movie !!!

But in reality happening on the top of the USA. What shame for a country having chosen this uncontrolled  dingbat, likewise a danger to the world.

Bannon is a an opportunistic petty bully who was using Trump. Yes, Don Jr. exercised poor judgement, and yes, he shouldn't have had the meeting, but it was inconsequential and nothing came of it. It will be up to the courts to decide if it gets that far.

Bannon was fired because he was fomenting hatred and discord and wants to be back at the center of attention. Trump has dealt with his kind before and will crush him.

This is just more political chicanery nonsense.

Careful there.  You're hitting pretty close to home for a bunch of guys in Thailand.  Minus a few zero's on the bank account, mind you.

There is no "political chicanery" as Trump knows zero about politics, he is just a vindictive juvenile SOB (a presidentially used term). Gannon always was a petty opportunistic bully, even when dragging Trump across the (unintended) finish line.

You say:

Quote

Bannon was fired because he was fomenting hatred and discord

Trump's entire campaign and Presidency so far has been about fomenting hatred and discord.

Bannon will help put Trump where he belongs - in a supermax next to Bernie Madoff. After that they can throw him in jail as well.

You have NO IDEA if it was inconsequential! I bet you still believe Jnrs first story about it being about adoptions! It was TREASON what part do you not get about that as an American (not a Republican). And Donald Jnr is not a kid as some in the media (including his Father) portray, he is almost 40 years old.

Trump and all his enablers are going to be buried and Bannon and the book by Wollf are the catalyst to accelerating that process. I imagine all those that tell us "The Clintons Cash" book is all true will be telling us the latest Trump book is all fake.

Thanks for the global comedy show. What a pity our greatest Ally turned out to be the worlds clown. Having participated in 3 wars at the behest of the USA, if I had a time machine I might well go back and be a conscientious objector! Boy how the mighty fall.

The one who will win is Bannon as his true aim was always freely stated to be the break down of Government. He wants anarchy, and he might get it.

Look, trump is a troll. Bannon is a troll. Don't want to take sides on this. They both deserve to crash and burn. Which is more bizarre and more of a threat to a decent America? Your guess is as good as mine.  Yes, seeing them fight has got to be a good thing.

Possibly, but after excerpts from the book were published why did Trump attack Bannon and not Wolff?
Don't try to assign rationality to anything the clown does but perhaps because he has a personal connection to Bannon which he now feels he needs to separate totally from. Also there is probably at least some truth in allegations.

"Ivanka thought she'd be president': the top revelations from the new book on Trump"

""Balancing risk against reward, both Jared and Ivanka decided to accept roles in the West Wing over the advice of almost everyone they knew. It was a joint decision by the couple, and, in some sense, a joint job. Between themselves, the two had made an earnest deal: If sometime in the future the opportunity arose, she'd be the one to run for president."
