A man fleeing the kingdom to live in Laos had his mother and teenage son working as drugs mules for him until both were arrested on Thursday, police alleged on Friday.

Ketmanee Chaiwiset, 53, and her grandson, Ae, 15, were arrested at their house in Udon Thani’s Mueang district on Thursday.

Udon Thani police chief Pol Maj-General Pirapong Wongsamarn told a press conference that the grandmother and boy were arrested after the teenager rode a motorcycle to carry 32,845 methamphetamine pills from a bank of the Mekong River to their house.

Pirapong said police had received tips-off that the grandmother and grandson had been keeping meth pills at their house and distributed them to people in the neighbourhood.

Pirapong quoted the woman as admitting that she and her grandson have been distributing the drugs for her son, Weerachart Somchit, 34.

Pirapong said Weerachart had jumped bailed from a robbery case and fled to live in Laos.

Ketmanee said her son had previously crossed the river on a long-tail boat and left the drugs at a spot on the riverbank for the grandson to pick up and later hand over to clients. She said she and her grandson had taken up and delivered the drug for Weeraschart three times and were arrested on the fourth trip.
