hi ,

I have a bathroom that I did the surface with tiles (looks bad..in the kitchen very different..).

I want to buy marble and to stick it on the tiles.

what material I need for this?

Is there a silicon or other thing that can do the job.?

the thais say take of the tiles and put "simens" to stick the marble..I know that can do it .in my country we did all the house with some kind of glue on the old tiles.

Your advice pls. :o

If your attempting to glue marble tile over existing tile it will work if the existing tile is clean and solid. in america we use "thinset motar" but I am not sure if it is available here. mix "portland cement" with silicon sand add bonding glue or concrete glue to the water. make sure your existing tile is clean and score it slightly with some rough sandpaper. use a notched trowel and lay the tile as normal. i have done this for years without any problems.

Dude, you so can not do that. Those tiles need to come off the wall. Don't be so cheap, hire somebody that knows what they are doing. If you did that the first time you would not have to redue now.

Its quite a bit of work to score the current tiles properly. If you've done it a few times and know what your doing its not bad but If you haven't, unless you want more shiite, tear out the tiles and start with a real base to tile on.

For most things your only as good as the foundation you start with. This is not like a composite roof that you can reroof 3 times before tearing it out.

It is fairly easy to tear out tile. Lots of websites tell you how. You have to have a pretty good trow hand to smooth out areas if you already have a fubared tile job.

If however your talking about large marble slabs and not small marble tiles than going over your old tile job is not difficult.

Yes, thinset is available, it's commonly known as "poon tokay", about 120 baht/20kg. Different qualities depending on the surface; i.e., concrete, wood, gypsum, etc. Available at Global Supply in Khon Kaen or Roi Et, possibly Home Mart. First etch the existing tile with a solution of muratic acid (wear face, hand & nose protection) diluted with water (acid 1 part; water 5-10 parts). Then apply the thinset with a notched trowel (notches the depth of the thickness of the new tile or marble) then apply the new material...Vualla...

Hi thanks for the reply.

I'm talking about marble size 150cm/60cm.

Its not that I'm trying to save money as one of you said..I just afraid that when they will do it they will make the tiles around break (that wall around or other thing..and then to repair it it will not look nice as it is now.

My idea is just not touch nothing.buy the marble fit to the surface I want to stick it on with the right material. and thats all..

I dont know I tell you in my country we did it all the house guys...really all the house only in thailand I suggest it they always repeat the mantra.."SIMENS SIMENS.. I cant understand why need to work twice when have good material that do the job easily...

When I had the house refurbished the bathrooms were done in marble and it involved the marble slabs being built like a wall, only one course could be put up at a time and the next when the former course was set. It took many days to do, I think if you stuck marble onto a wall it would not be flat or plumb and look a mess.

Having laid my own tiles many times and had great results, I feel qualified to do tiles but I would never attempt to lay marble or granite.

I have had marble and granite jobs done many times and it takes a real craftsman or artist to get it right. Granite is more difficult to lay, but the result is longer lasting and not subject to stains or rings like marble is.

While I ordered granite counter tops in both of my baths, they substituted marble in one of them without my knowledge and now I have water marks on the marble while the granite is as good as the day it was laid. I have always used granite in a kitchen, and while I have heard of marble kitchens, I think there is a real maintenance problem there. There are many marble refinishers but who has heard of a granite refinisher?

Thai granite is quite inexpensive and I would go that way if cost is an objective, otherwise imported granite gives you more choice.

Its not for the walls....

Its for the counter top in my bathroom.

You should tell from the beginning that this is a countertop. Make sure that underlayment is flat and just use silicon as a glue.

Wall tile installation is different as you really need to stick the tile to the backing with tile glue, mastic, thinset or mortar depending on your country and terminology used. In case of countertops esp. large marble or granite gravity will keep the countertop down and the glue just supposed prevent any movement. As there will be no foot traffic (I suppose) silicon should be more than enough. Silicon esp. when compressed it is becoming a very good glue. (Actually that is why it is not often used for vertical installations, you can't compress it against the wall, wood glues work in a similar fashion)
