I was going to make another thread for This but I think it its suitable for this thread especially because I have had high cholesterol before. Dose anyone drink Green tea Matcha?

I am have started a health kick recently and have been drinking lots of smoothies, and now I have started drinking green tea. This is what I have done all this week about 10g of green tea leaves in a pot add hot water then leave it to completely cool down, then put it all in a 2lt drinking water bottle and the juice of 4 limes then fill it up to the top with water and put in the fridge then every time I would normally drink water I would now be drinking green tea with lime and it tastes lovely in my opinion.

But I've noticed this green tea matcha stuff and today I googled it and this is what I found.

If its true its 10 times more healthier than green tea which is already considered the healthiest beverage on the planet.

So I am thinking of adding this to my daily smoothie

This is basically what's it's been for the last few weeks

40grams of rolled oats

2 table spoons of seeds I change Daily between pumpkin /sunflower /flax/ sesame( I would like 2 use hemp seeds but they are well expensive and I am not even sure if legal and I've only seen them on the Internet)

2 spinach balls

some fruit I was using bananas or frozen / strawberries/peaches and blackberrys but today I bought some frozen kiwi fruit then Googled it and its seems a amazing healthy fruit one person even said its the only true proven super food so I might stick to that most days.

150ml of 0% Milk

150ml of Greek style yogurt

And a tiny bit of turmeric

A tablespoon of honey

My goal is to have a healthy smoothly everyday and replace 1 meal hopefully make sure I don't have high cholesterol loose a bit of weight and just be more healthy.

But now I am thinking of adding this green tea matcha has anyone tried it and if so what one and where do you buy it there is a lot 2 chose from and they vary in price and I read that some are really good and some maybe not.

So what do you all think about the health benefits of my smoothie to me it seems like a super drink and I can't see why adding green tea matcha would not be brilliant.

Hard to get anything else when you order green tea at a coffee shop in Thailand. The downside is that what is served is almost always with added milk, Matcha without the milk is quite bitter.  Having said that, to buy your own, any good quality supermarket will have a selection, just make sure it is from Japan and generally the more expensive the higher the quality and potency.

Can't disagree with what you said, especially as you have had some experience, however the research on these things is very mixed!

First of all it's been pretty well established that diet plays only a very small part in high cholesterol levels because most of it is manufactured by the liver, and some people are prone to high cholesterol levels which are out of their control in the main (unfortunately for them).

So sure eat healthy, however those predisposed to high cholesterol levels will not find that it helps that much. Furthermore the latest research doesn't seem to worry too much about high cholesterol levels, so one wonders if all of those folks on statins really need to be?

Then of course there is the mixed messages from the medical fraternity themselves, where my doctor/surgeon suggested that if I wanted to go on them, I could take them pretty well for the rest of my life with no real side-effects; others have said that there are some potentially drastic side-effects; and yet another publication by a medical journal quoted other doctors/specialist as saying that it wouldn't be a bad thing for everybody to go on statins!

So what are we to do? This when the medical fraternity are at odds on this subject!

I'm all for trying natural things, and the first time I tried Policosanol it worked over a three-month period or thereabouts, however I couldn't source them again from the manufacturer because they had stopped making this particular brand, stating that they couldn't get the high quality raw materials they wanted (from sugarcane, not other sources).

Cholestene, which is derived from red yeast rice, contains a natural compound similar to one used in a particular brand of statin, so although I like the natural approach of this, how natural is it if it is in fact a type of statin, or mimics one?

Much to ponder on this subject.............

A few points. People are put on statins for different reasons. It's not only for prevention but also for people that have already experienced heart attacks or strokes. The latter type of statin use would usually be seen as medically very necessary rather than an option.

The point I was trying to emphasize is that once you start on statins (as most start for prevention) there are possibly serious medical risks if you decide to quit all statins later after taking them for a very long time. NOT necessarily because of the prevention part being withdrawn but because of the changes in your body from taking statins themselves.

So deciding to go on statins for prevention should not be taken lightly because if you start you will likely be on them for the rest of your life.

The debate on the pros and cons is very complex. There are good arguments for both.

An excellent example of this debate can be seen in this episode of the BBC show Trust Me I'm A Doctor --

Relying on just the numbers may not be preventing heart disease.  For example firms have abandoned efforts for drugs that raise HDL as it could not be shown that raising HDL via drugs had any protective benefit even though high HDL  levels obtained normally were protective.

Statins may have a benefit in reduced mortality that is not seen with other methods that simply lower the numbers.

I have the problem of low cholestrol it normally runs around 130 or so. This can cause memory loss, low testosterone, even suicide. Taking statins may increase your life expectancy about 3 months over a 10 year period

This low cholesterol confuses me. Mine is now 133, but the LDL, HDL and triglycerides are all within normal parameters.

I am told the 133 is low (min on the sheet says 150) but from other sources it says the min is 130. I reduced the statin dosage from 40 to 20 for a few months (been on them about 7 years) so will have another test done next month and this time speak to a doctor as I should have done late last year.

Total cholesterol level is mainly used just to flag patients in need of more detailed bloodwork. Beyond that it has no real clinical utility and as long as the HDL and LDL are in normal range there is no need to be concerned about a total Cholesterol value that is a little over or below the reference range.

That said, as you likely know the higher the HDL the better and if the total C is on the low side, the HDL even if within normal range is likely at the low end of that range and getting it up a bit by consuming more foods high in Omega 3 fats would be desirable.
