Thai authorities enforce strict measures to prevent influx of foreign workers

BANGKOK, 29 January 2018 (NNT) – Authorities have stepped up measures along the border to prevent an influx of foreign workers.

Following the government’s announcement of Thailand’s nationwide minimum wage rise of five to 22 baht from April 1st, northeastern Buriram became one of the provinces to see the daily rate increased to 315 baht from 300 baht.

Buriram provincial police chief Pol. Maj. Gen. Chaiyuth Jiansirikul has accordingly instructed officers in all 34 local police stations to step up border control measures along all roads and to collaborate with the Border Patrol Police to inspect all suspected locations, particularly along borders, to prevent illegal entry of foreign workers from Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Chaiyuth stated that illegal workers must be arrested and returned to their respective countries.

All local businesses and employers have also been warned not to hire any illegal workers otherwise they will be prosecuted while members of the public are asked to report the presence of any illegal labor to the police, added the Buriram provincial police chief.

Much like illegal immigrants in the US from south of the Rio Grande who mostly

do the work Americans will not do. (crop pickers, slaughterhouses etc..) Thai illegal

migrants do the work Thais will not do, construction labour, etc....

As with many things, the law of unintended consequences will come into

play if border security is successful in stopping the influx.

Oh yeah! This enourmous hike of 15 bath a day, will surely create a flooding of foreigners that want to reap the giant profit.

Have they checked this with TAT? It might reduce "tourist" count from Laos and Cambodia.

Yes.... like the developer will have to give up a few points of the huge margin it gets.  If the labour rate in construction were fair it would change the work ethic of the country. Illegal labor meddles with free enterprise...it makes the rich richer.....imo.

I hear this talk always and everywhere, the local people don't want to do this work.

Really?

Or maybe it is the local people don't want to do this work because it is so low paid and bad work conditions?

Take into account that mostly illegals and foreign workers are much cheaper.

Once the illegal labour dries up for the construction projects of the wealthy then the "crackdown" will be relaxed.

Wouldn't it be more productive to simply document and register illegal foreign workers when they're apprehended?

Thailand needs unskilled/low skilled labor that's not being met by Thai citizens for whatever the reason. Instead it plays this "cat and mouse" that's ultimately a zero-sum game that has no end.

I agree. They should bank that 15 baht and live off the interest ........ :passifier:
