Hi!

I am hoping that someone out there will be able to offer me some info regarding hiring a car from any good and reputable car hire companies within the Sathorn District of Bangkok, that are offering a good deal and particularly a company that doesn't require me to leave an extortionate ' security deposit ' as well as the car hire fee! I have been quoted by one company, a security deposit of 30,000 Baht would be required!!! Is this a normal practise?

Incidentally,I am looking to hire a large SUV type of vehicle ( Toyota Fortuna? )   for a 7 day period and I wish to have unlimited kms within the hire period contract.

Also,I am an experienced driver, with a 35 year blemish free driving record.I also possess an International Driving Permit,Driving License (Australian)  and driving insurance.

I hope to hear from you soon! All info greatly appreciated!

Thanks! :>)

Having recently sold my car while waiting for new one to arrived we (Wife and I) attempted to rent a car for anywhere between 2 weeks to a month.

The rental companies were all disinterested...  mainly because this is a busy time for them and most had no availability. Others were uncontactable with a recorded message suggesting I call back within office hours (I'd called at 10am on a weekday !)

Other companies suggested I pick up the car from Suvarnabhumi (as their city office had no availability) but I had to wait a few days.

In short my wife and I tired about 10 companies before we simply became fed up.

Are the Care Hire companies asking for 30,000 baht in lieu of Credit Card details ? (i.e. to cover the excess in any collision depending which ever CDW you choose).

Ultimately the nearest car hire place to you in Sathorn may be SIXT who's Bangkok office is next to Millennium Autos (BMW) at the Rama IV end of Sukhumvit 24

Hope this helps a little, after a couple of days searching I bought a bike to get around on... or if with Wife and Son we rely on UBER or Grab taxi (which is not ideal as I wanted to use child car seat (4 yr old)).

Hi Richard!

Thanks for your info! With regard to the 30,000 Baht deposit in lieu of my credit card details.......... the company ( and it is a well known hire company) require me to submit my card details, but because I do not use a credit card,,,,only a debit card.....they stated that 30,000 Baht will be debited from my account to cover as security. They also said that a 30,000 Baht cash deposit was prohibited, only leaving my card details would be honoured.

With regards to the SIXT rental company.....I will check them out tomorrow!

Cheers!

This is normal. If you are using a "real" credit card, they are "blocking" this amount on your card, which means nothing more than charging this amount and when you return it it will be refunded. If you have just a debit card of course you will see this transaction on your bank account, but this is nothing you should worry about. Just get the "zero damage waiver" or however they call it, for usually just a few hundred THB extra, then you don't have to pay for any damages.

I've rented a few times at different places in Thailand (never in Bangkok tho), with the big international companies like Sixt, Avis, Hertz... and never had any problems with it.

Hi jacked....ta for your reply!

Yeah,I was definitely going to take out the zero collision damage waiver....I guess my concern is whether my 30,000 Baht security deposit would be returned once  the rental period was over! But thanks for your reassurance on that aspect!

Actually what's possible, but i used this only once and not in Thailand, because in Thailand i always just walked in at the rental companies:

You can rent a car, in for example Thailand, through third party companies in your home country (at least in Germany these companies / websites exist, probably in Australia too). This means that you make the contract about renting the car with the company in your home country, and you are thus protected by consumer protection laws in your country, and if there is any problem you can even take them to court in your home country. This would be an example for such a company / website in Germany: https://www.billiger-mietwagen.de

I will definitely bear that in mind once I return to Australia, but because I am in Bangkok at the mo, I will do what you do yourself and just walk in to a hire company off the street!

Try Lumpini Car Rent, near Lumpini police station opposite the park. I always use them although not for some time.  Always paid by cash, B2,000 refundable deposit for insurance excess.  Ask for Laddawan, she speaks English, 02 255 3483.
