Hi, I am having a Sauna shipped to me from Australia to put in the basement of my house. It will come in 3 boxes and weigh 435 kilos.

does anyone have any idea how much import tax I would be paying for this and if it is an easy process?

also I need to have it shipped from Bangkok to Koh Phangan, is it possible do you think for me to arrange this from here without having to travel to Bangkok?

I have never imported a sauna from Australia, but have imported other things from China.

The main problem to me seems to be at the Thai port and the various charges.

I suppose you have a good shipping agent already, so try and get it shipped in a container so it is delivered to you, then you don't have to get it unpacked at the port.

Can I offer a suggestion?

They do make them in Thailand, so sourcing from here may be a better idea.

Also, the one you buy from Australia will probably have been made in China. Now China and Thailand are part of the Asian free trade zone, so if you have all the paperwork from the company in China, exactly correct, you should not have to pay import duty if you buy it from China.

We are in the process of getting a container load of stuff from China. If you can wait a month or so I can tell you all about it, if you choose the China option.

I would like more info generally on how one goes about clearing something like that through customs and shipping onwards down south, ideally I don’t want to have to go up to BKK to organise, anyone any experience in this?

Thailand and Australia have a direct free trade agreement, in theory if it has made in Australia stamped on the box then it should be no/minimal duties etc.

in theory

Isn't that the main rub for anything imported into Thailand, you don't know until it gets here and then it is too late since Bonded Customs Warehouse storage will eat you alive

I import many large items and even full 40' containers.  You are best to contact a logistics company here and have them handle everything for you including shipment in Thailand.  I use:

CUSTOMS BROKER AND LOGISTICS, BangkokThailand

You should contact Marc as he is the Bangkok Manager.  Ralf has been promoted to COO and spends a lot of time in Miami, Florida.  They have there own customs department and should be able to tell you what the duty is and whether it will require an import license.
