webfact Posted February 11, 2018 Posted February 11, 2018 Efforts under way to tackle pollution in the seas of Phuket and Krabi By Thai PBS Local administration officials in Phuket and Krabi provinces have been trying to tackle pollution problem in the sea at Ao Nang beach of Krabi and the sea at Traitrang beach in Pa Tong of Phuket. Broken waste water treatment facilities have been blamed for the flow of untreated effluent from households and tourism-related establishments into the sea of both provinces which are popular destinations for both Thai and foreign tourists. Mr Tossaporn Chotechuang, director of the environment unit of the Krabi’s Office of Natural Resources and Environment, said over the weekend that the office had sought permission from the Marine Department to build a new waste water treatment facility with 6.9 million baht budget approved by the Krabi provincial administration, but a permission has yet to be issued by the Marine Department. Popular Post smedly Posted February 11, 2018 Popular Post Posted February 11, 2018 And is the Marine Dept going arrest and jail those responsible for this damage to the environment under marine protection laws ? Nope - just tourists smoking on an outdoor open air beach who are damaging nothing 6 2

By the time the budget filters down to actually paying for any sewerage works after paying off politicians and developers. They will only have enough left to install one sign at the beach stating, " Do not swim after heavy rain". Below that a message, with microscopic words that says " Heavily polluted 24/7 whether it rains or not. Toxic water. Swim at your own risk" 4 1

eliotness Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 With the best will in the world the document process, approval process and finally the construction phase will take 2 to 3 years, but in Thailand it's liable to be much longer. So in the meantime the pollution will continue and probably get worse !

eliotness Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 Two different reasons given, broken sewage treatment facilities and illegal hotels.I would suggest get the sewage treatment fixed asap, afterall what's the point of directing more sewage into facilites that don't work. I noticed he used the plural, so there must be more than one "facility" broken. Obviously no rush then !!!
sammieuk1 Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 Pattaya's beaches could now be declared blue flag in comparison. 1
farcanell Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 Unbelievably, it seems harder to figure out which businesses are legal, and which not. shut down all the illegal operations and bulldoze all of them (and any leaking plumbing)... this solves this problem, and many more besides.
