Man Cave/Guest room

Recommended Posts

Thinking about building a detached man cave that I can also use for occasional visitors.

Looking at 35/40 sqm for this simple ‘studio’ .

Anyone undertaken such an exercise and what recommendations for materials etc......... steel frame with Shera boards on dry lining vs brick build...

Drop a 10cm concrete slab down and go with steel frame and Shera. Reckon you could knock up a nice building for 100k !

Bit of insulation between dry board and Shera, should be able to keep it cool enough for occasional visitor and your pottering...

Buy and old 40" container. 20' for you 20' for guests.

Not an option.............. would need 2 to meet my size requirements.

40ft container will cost you 30-50k these days, depending on condition.

I looked at this option very carefully.

It's more cost effective to go with a steel or block build.

Still like the container concept though and have not ruled it out 100%

Why not Q Block then you wont need insulation

That remains an option............

.......it is why I am looking for opinions/experiences with brick vs steel framed/dry lined etc.

That friendship is likely to last longer if you actually contributed something useful to my enquiry.

To prove that you are in fact more use than an ashtray on a motorcy, you could start by knocking up some costings.....

..... and don't come up with your usual 38,000 Baht answer to everything..... Cornish Carlos came up with 100k as a ballpark figure.... my budget is 200k but that includes aircon, tv, furnishings and blow up doll !

Where are you?

Build a barn. Local contractors know how to do that and then put your closed off spaces under it?  I watched a similar construction take place in BKK. Steel structure, steel or aluminium panels on the outside and roof. Then do basic interior walls etc.

Here's some more help:
Build it underground, install big airconditioners, and have a log fire. Very romantic setting for you and your doll.
Otherwise: you can buy those ready made concrete horizontal beams, with the concrete base. Easy for the Thais to have them standing up and anchored in half a day. Easy steel beam welding. Shell up in 2 days.
Then QCon 10 cm or 2 rows of 7.5 cm blocks. Windows from Global House Wellington I thunk the name, easy to install. My garage turned out ok with all this stuff. The fact that nothing's square will add to the man cave appeal. Make sure your floor doesn't slope too much as the pool balls get excited.
A roolladoor would be a nice touch to open the place up on moonlight nights and to sit happily under the stars with all the dengy mossies. (PS make sure the doll and vapour thinggy are hidden before you open the door.)

That option sounds interesting... Probably attracts less attention than a McMansion too :)

Good, helpful input.................. maybe slight exaggeration on the floor slope  - once I know which way they decide to slope it, I can the put the shower there ...

May have to locate the pool table outside - should be OK once the legs have settled into the rice paddy.

We did a steel frame and roof structure, block infill (weld bits of rebar to the steel to anchor the blocks). The chickens live in it

Could easily be made habitable.

Some pics of the end shed. In there now. With the insulated roof and the 10 cm QCon blocks will still be hot. Nice breeze when the roolladoor is opened and windows opened.

Pics of structure (no square allowed).

Pool table levelled off so the pool balls don't end up in the other pool.

Walltex paint gives a nice finish, nearly hides all the block work and plastering faults. If you use it go for the flatter texture finish or you'll puncture the doll and remove body bark as the really textured walls are sharp. The Walltex guy said it was easy to get the flat texture finish as you just go over it again with a bit of pvc pipe over the roller, coated in thinner...I think that's what he said. Anyway good luck with that one....I had no luck...I just watered down the paint and pressed harder.
