Been driving for 55 years and learnt something new today.

Somewhere on your dash you'll have a fuel gauge, electronic or needle type.

A petrol pump symbol will be displayed, but, and here's the bit I never knew until today.

At the side of the pump symbol will be an arrow < (left), or > (right).

This actually indicates which side the car is filled from.

No more feeling like a nerd pulling up to refuel on the wrong side of the pump.

Where is the gas cap on a 1957 Chevy ?

Could be the start of a good thread - no WWW searches - that's cheating !

The gas cap would be the only thing left of a 1957 Chevy.

Kick the rust pile around a bit to find it

Just found it behind the rear left light.......well what was left of it.

Jeez thanks pedro.

At least we now know one of the missing names at the time was Leonardo DiCaprio.

As I pull into the petrol station, if I don't know which side of the car/truck the fuel filler pipe is on, I just reach down and pull the lever for the cover over the filler pipe to pop it open and look in the rear view mirror to see which side it is on, and adjust driving direction left or right accordingly. No knowledge of arrows (or their meaning) required.

I learned that a few years ago and regularly check the panel because I have one car with the tank on the left, and one on the right.... I can never automatically remember which is which.

Inside the left-side taillight assembly.  I didn't have to cheat.  My 4th grade teacher had a '57 4-door turquoise blue/white and I use to pump gas at my father's Phillip 66.

There have been fuel-fill side indicators for years in the US.  At least 24 years, as my '94 Dodge PU had one. In my experience pumping gas (60's & 70's), it didn't matter what side the filler cap was located. The hoses were always long enough to reach under the other side.

What about those cars I've seen that have the filler cap behind the licence plate in the center of the car????

:whistling:

Those were for drivers who couldn't remember something as simple as which side the re-fuel filler was on their car.   Kind of like of ambidextrous mittens.
