Fire swept through an area of Narathiwas Ratchanakharin Soi 6 in the early hours of this morning.

Thai Rath reported that 5 people were taken to hospital with burns as 8 properties were razed.

Fire engines had difficulty accessing the scene because the soi and sub-soi are so narrow.

Electricity was cut to a wide area of South Sathorn as a precaution as the blaze took hold around 12.50am.

Prayat Udommechai, 62 and Thanyalak Udommechai were taken to St Louis Hospital.

Thanyaway Udommechai, 18, and Muinan, a Burmese who jumped from the second floor of a house, were taken to Charoen Krung Hospital.

Chaowalit Suwanwasit, 32 was in Lertsin Hospital. All the victims suffered burns.

Residents said that the properties in that area of the soi were rental or used for storage.

Someone blamed a Cambodian who rented a house there for leaving incense sticks burning.

Thai Rath said the investigation into the cause and source of the blaze would begin in the morning. The news media said that many residents grabbed what they could and fled as the fire engulfed the area.
