It's a crime: Foreigners marrying Thais now subject to fingerprints taken for criminal background

Finger prints not that bad, but when they want dna sample it will be too much. If became mandatory I would offer to give a dark and brown hard one or creamy fresh liquid sample.

It's rather pointless because any foreigner with a serious criminal record in Thailand would have been deported and blacklisted after finishing his prison sentence.  Being unable to check for foreign criminal records makes it completely pointless.

I would advise foreigners marrying Thais to ask them for a Thai police clearance which can be obtained inexpensively on request.

What's the matter with you people. I got a pink ID and yellow book and had to give my fingerprints too.

Nobody say's that you have to stay in this country if you not accept the rules and regulations.

As soon as I make a comment about how "messed up" the United States, is ... Someone in Thailand speaks.  :(

The real crime here is after all the recommended checks have been completed any foreigner still remains subject to annual visa requirements no matter how long he or she has been married and supporting their spouse and family, it is high time the Thai government addressed this and made it easier for foreigners to gain residence, say after marriage then living and supporting his or her family for a period of five years without leaving the country.

I would have no problem with the Thai immigration totally vetting me as long as they make it easier for me to be in Thailand when I am not working. I have been here for 12 years and married for 10. I work all over the globe but have

spent all my earnings in Thailand to support my family. Why do I still have to go to some other country to get my Thai spouse visa and why do I need to leave Thailand every 90 days. It is a hell of a hassle.

Next up...Eye Scanning, DNA Samples, Wallet Searches Et al !

the wallet search has been going on for ages. what goes on is actually closer to wallet raids than searches.

The U.S. should charge Thai's more to get into parks and places like Disneyland. They also should fingerprint them if they want to marry non Thai's. Every racist policy of insert name of country should be implemented in the country of the targeted citizens.

I can't just go to Mexico (or anywhere really) and have a child and consider that child to be my anchor baby, etc.

The idea can be linked to the Dunning–Kruger effect, "a cognitive bias wherein unskilled individuals suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly rating their ability much higher than is accurate" owing to "a metacognitive inability of the unskilled to recognize their ineptitude" (and, by the same token, of "highly skilled individuals to underestimate their relative competence, erroneously assuming that tasks which are easy for them are also easy for others")." (From "Open Culture".)

When my Canadian friend married a Thai woman, she needed a police, security check to satisfy Canada, and Thailand before she left Thailand, so you punters that want to believe otherwise, good luck to you and your

fantasy. It does swing both ways. Not sure about othrr countries, but I suspect their security needs are

similar.  After all 9, 11, affected us all.

Can't see what the big deal is here....

Non-EU Nationals have their fingerprints scanned when entering the UK.

The criminal history check is also a good idea given the recent news and reputation Thailand has as a place for criminals to live. Thailand has every right to protect its citizens for marrying those who may have criminal records or at least ensure that this information is known to the marrying party.

In a perfect world, in which records are:

1. Kept under the strictest security

2. Corruption is non-existent

there is nothing wrong with this idea.

In reality, the more information authorities collect on you, the more exposed you are to risks of identity theft, false incrimination, and various types of scams.

Your privacy is crucial even if you are a 100% law abiding person.

Asking for a police check is one thing - I see nothing wrong in that -but collecting fingerprints is another.

Bionics to the rescue.... for the little willy at least.... It is amazing the small advances they have made recently.... bigger advances to replace the chair will of course have to wait for bigger advances.   I just don't know what bionic willies produce....

Not only should foreigners who are about to marry a Thai woman look into her background, I believe it would be money well spent, to hire a very good private detective, to scan her history, and determine if there is anything you should concern yourself with. At the very least, take alot of time to get to know her.

Has anyone noticed a new presence, that appears to be of a more xenophobic nature, than previously? Or is it my imagination?

So, we should turn the tables. In Thailand alot of women do not really know what love is. They confuse a slight degree of affection, and the thrill of the exchange of money, with love. It is a perversion of the term. Sometimes, what she means to say is, I liked most of these guys. And I loved their cash.

The biggest part of the problem here, is the extreme emasculation that is taking place in the West. Most men, in the US, Europe, and Oz, are no longer real men, when it comes to dealing with their women. Their women have made their lives so difficult, and alot of women have gotten so far away from their innate femininity, and have become dominant, and super controlling, and men just go along with it. Most men have become so hungry for love, or emotionally desperate for some kindness, and TLC. And most are so desirous of being around a real woman, who knows how to act like a woman, and manifest the dignity, within femininity. So, it is easy for the con artists, like this worm Jariyaporn, to take advantage of emotionally wounded men, who seem to be willing to do anything to regain a semblance of normality in their lives, with a decent woman.

The bottom line is this. Take your time getting to know a woman here, or anywhere. Time is your ally. It is rarely their ally. They are usually trying to step up the timetable. We need to push back. We need to assert control. An environment like this allows us to do so. Take advantage of that. Be a man. Step up. Pay tribute to the gender. Refuse to lay down anymore. Refuse to be a doormat. Refuse to check your cajones at the door. Start making the decisions, and stop saying "honey what do you want?". "What will make you happy?" "Where do you want to eat?" I have so many friends, who come here, and from the very start, make the same mistakes they made back in the West. Except here, they do not need to make those mistakes. The environment does not dictate that they behave like lambs. Many do not know, or realize that, or they succumb to "force of habit". Every ship needs a captain. If the man is not willing to be the captain of the ship, the woman will take over, here in Thailand. Most women here seem to want a strong man. But, if they end up with a wimp, they will take charge. Someone has to.

Always remember, if it is good, it is only going to get better. If there are problems, or if she is a big baby, who only looks like a real woman, but in reality is a 13 year old, or if she is a con artist, if she is only in it for the money, those realizations will manifest themselves over time. Time allows clarity. Never, ever move too quickly. That is the undoing of most of these guys. Be like Bond. be a real man. Man up. Do yourself proud.

If you took your time getting to know her, now you are reaping the benefits of your patience, and your wisdom. This is such a common mistake. Most women want to step up the timetable, and if a man is not strong, and does not stick to his principals, or have a determined agenda, he is often overwhelmed by her lack of patience, and the fact that alot of women want it all, and they want it yesterday. You are blessed. You found a good one. Me too. I took 9 years before marrying her. And she has become a BETTER version of herself, since we got married! In a million years, that would not have happened in the US.

For the men out there who are trying to find their way, in this rather complicated arena, always remember one thing. Take your time. If it is good, it is only going to get better. If there are issues, they are going to reveal themselves over time. 2 years minimum, before you commit large sums of cash, or commit to marriage. And that is two years, full time! Be like Bond. Do as Bond would do. Be a man. Man up. Now is the time to show who you are.

And lastly, the one about getting along with the parents is a good one. Often, that is a sign of an emotionally healthy woman. When I used to date, the two questions I would ask were-

1. How is your relationship with your mom and dad? How about your siblings?

2. What is the most money you have ever spent on a handbag? Wow. Was that ever a revealing question. The answers were all over the map, but inevitably demonstrated alot about her character.

Erm... if a potential partner’s past is so clouded that you’d need a PI to shed light on it, her past is clearly too questionable to consider the future....

And yes, definitely take the time to know her at the very least.

Sounds like a sensible thing to do to me .It would be great if people with major offenses such as murder or rape were also stopped from entering Thailand ,one recent killing in Pattaya would not have happened if that was the case .Back here in the UK today we are reading that  jihadi brides who went off with their vile terrorist husbands to Iraq and Syria have been allowed back into the UK ,AND WE ARE NOT HAPPY ABOUT IT .No country should allow traitors and criminals in ,they have a responsibility to their citizens .

You have several good points, but  unfortunately some of them seems to come in a conflict between the the teoretical and the practial part based on the lack of inherent basic leadership skills.

As we should know, not all of us men have what it takes to be a captain and a change of location will not change that fact and make those become one.....:coffee1:

The issue is the reason stated for the criminal record check -- is the responsibility of the immigration department with regards to issuing a fiancé / marriage visa -- not some two bit local provincial administrative department.  You do not get the right to reside here because of marriage, only that that is one avenue to apply for a visa ... but visas can always be denied to people that the government deems not worthy.   As such the regulation change is just racist or xenophobic if they are requiring the check only on the foreigner (for permission to get married).

The reason is not racist or xenophobic, read the linked article where it explains very clearly that the change was brought in to ensure that foreigners are not marrying just for the purpose of getting a visa.

How will it stop anyone marrying for the purpose of getting a visa? if you marry just for this purpose, this means your fingerprints must have been taken by the police beforehand and you already have a criminal record? This makes no sense. And if you come to Thailand to perform illegal activities, just get married first, before your prints are ever taken by the police, no record, easy!

Think about it, it makes no sense to perform this check when registering for marriage. When getting extensions in the immigration, perhaps, but immigration have enough fun already (see my last paragraph).

So let's discuss the specific case of just stopping past offenders with criminal record in Thailand from getting married and then using the marriage certificate to get a marriage visa.

When a foreigner tries to register his marriage, they will take the fingerprints and check if he was involved with criminal activities within Thailand (they have no means to check criminal record abroad), if so, refuse the registration.

So far so good.

But if he was involved with any serious criminal activities within Thailand, that justify this kind of handling, and was caught and gave his fingerprints to the police (otherwise he can't be identified with this new method), how come he is in Thailand at all? wasn't he supposed to be arrested, imprisoned, and deported? And if so, how did he get back?

So, who are we dealing with here? criminals who were arrested, deported, managed to work their way back into Thailand (changed their names? and got a new passport?), and those people now go to register a marriage and apply for a marriage visa..? Sounds far fetched. And now, with this regulation, will it stop those thugs from staying in Thailand? "Oh my, I can't register for marriage or get a marriage visa. Well, I will just give up my drug peddling". Right.

Let's be realistic. There will be the agents who will process the marriage registrations for this or another sum of money, and it's safe to assume some of it go to those hard working officials. More regulations don't mean better enforcement, it means more power to officials, and power is good. Why should immigration have all the fun? and yes, Xenophobia, just like the TM30 nonsense or the 90 days reporting. It will never stop criminals from doing their thing. It will just be another hassle or violation of privacy for the rest.
