Relatives and doctor say stop blaming CPR girl Nong Jaen

Relatives and medical staff have called on unkind people to stop blaming the young woman for straddling a dying man on a stretcher.

 

Nong Jaen - real name Peeraya Saena, 20, - was shown on a video that went viral helping the man after his pulse stopped following a fire in Chan Road Soi 51.

 

Some people have suggested she should not have climbed on top of the man while most people called her a hero for trying her best in the circumstances. 

 

Sanook reported that the first year university student got a call from a friend that there was trouble in the area which explained why she was not in foundation uniform.

 

She has been trained in CPR and has worked as a volunteer with the Ruam Katanyu foundation for three years already.

 

She rushed to help at the scene of the fire and along with other medics attended 60 year old Aran Inthirom who had had a seizure after rushing to gather up possessions to flee the fire.

 

His pulse had ceased and she offered to take over the CPR that was already being done by other medics if they got tried. It was soon realized that they had to get Arun to hospital.

 

"The soi was very narrow and there was 300 meters to the ambulance," said Nong Jaen. "It was important to keep the CPR going all the way to the ambulance so I jumped on top. 

 

"Of course the proper way to do CPR is at the side of the victim but that couldn't be done in this case. 

 

"I didn't think for one moment how it looked - I just wanted to get a pulse and save that man's life".

 

Arun did not make it and was reported dead in Charoen Krung hospital on Wednesday.

 

Nong Jaen said she had performed CPR in this way on a bed before when it was necessary to straddle the patient. 

 

Support for the volunteer medic came from the elder sister of the deceased man Rasamee Thanyawetkij who said she was at the scene all the time. She had nothing but praise for the help that Nong Jaen gave her younger brother and said she did everything she could to try and save him.

 

She "wai-ed" in heartfelt appreciation at the scene.

 

Nong Jaen continued working on her brother in the ambulance, she added, speaking at the temple in Bangkok where funeral rites were set to be held.

 

A doctor who is part of the admin team at the Drama Addict Facebook page where the story featured said that normally CPR should be done at the side of the patient. But Nong Jaen had to do what she did to try to get the pulse going and absolutely did the right thing in the circumstances.

 

Dr Withawat Siriprachai said that Arun had suffered some kind of seizure and also had diabetes exacerbating his condition. He was tired from over exerting himself in moving objects after the fire.

 

He praised the actions of Nong Jaen saying that those who might criticize her were incorrect.

It makes a nice change to see some proper 1st aid being applied, albeit it unsuccessful this time.

Many more lives would be saved in Thailand if the general public were taught basic 1st aid (ie recovery position etc) and not afraid to have a go.

Unfortunately, they snap a few photos or video for Facebook then stand and stare....

Not to discredit her efforts, but any medical professional would have done the same. As mentioned in the article, she took over from a medic who was getting tired.

 

Its kind of a shame this happens many times a day all around Thailand and only when its caught on video and causes some comments online people start to take notice.

 

There are literally thousands of doctors and nurses sacrificing their own health working in stressful and overwhelmed hospitals day-in and day-out. Lets give them all the respect they deserve no matter their gender, age, and looks.

Sorry...but I don't get it...

What exactly was she criticized for?

For -under the given circumstances- not performing CPR in the accurate manor?

Or is this some kind of moral thing, like "she should have not sat upon him, as it is inappropriate"?

 

Anyways, in both cases: get a life, idiots and how about you learn some CPR, so in a case like this. you can help?

As I stated elsewhere, this lady did everything possible she could do under the circumstances.

 

I give this lady 150 out of 100, and as I posted on the original story, I only hope someone of her caliber is available if I ever need help.

 

Most people do not realize that CPR is used to try to bring a dead person back to life.  What do I mean by dead..No heartbeat, No breathing, organ failure minutes away...dead for all practical reasons without a form of immediate medical help.

 

People, foreigners and Thais, that have criticized her for how she was positioned as she did CPR and made lewd remarks disguised as "jokes", should be ashamed of themselves.

 

Pray that if you are basically dead, someone tries to bring you back to the living world as she tried.

 

She assessed the situation and under the circumstances did act in a manner that was both professional and proper.

 

Thank you young lady for your efforts.

Yep....I did it the other day.

 

Kinda uncomfortable when you have a prosthetic leg but 35 years of training kicked in..

What an inspirational young lady.. I for one would much prefer to see an interview with her detailing her training, devotion and spirit rather than another "soap star" detailing some fitness or latest fashion tip.

A great effort, unfortunately not successful. To all the idiots running down her attempt to assist - hopefully one day if you are in the same situation requiring CPR no one wastes time and effort on you.

I do not know what folks were complaining about.

But, maybe some may find fault in both the girls & the rescue? workers methods?

The girl was pumping frantically which is correct 100-120 pumps per minute required,

But she should stop after 30 pumps & allow the worker with that manual resuscitator to add air.

Instead she pumped continuously.

 

It also looks like worker is trying to pump manual resuscitator 

while she is pumping where he should pump only when she paused which she did not seem to.

I am not sure if all these smaller rescue? vehicles are trained EMT's or just medical taxi's in a sense.

 

But they tried & that is more commendable than none trying at all.
