UK RAC states IDP is required in LOS...
UK embassy said. Same thing. Dude on radio said they wrong.

The foreign licence must either be in English, or be accompanied by an official translation into English or Thai. The licence needs to have been issued by a country that has a treaty with the Thai government allowing the mutual acceptance of driving licences.  Most countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the USA have this agreement with Thailand under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic or the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic.

Either way, I won't be handing over my UK driving licence to some roadside hustler on the off chance that the following day when I pay my fine, the staff at the police station may or may not be able to find it. That is what an IDP is for. If it is lost, just get a new one. They only last a year anyhow.

Latest update: editorial amendments throughout this advice; Safety and security section (Road travel) - you must have an International Driving Permit or Thai driving licence to drive a car or ride a motorcycle in Thailand; if you use a motor vehicle without the correct licence, your travel insurance may be invalidated in the event of an injury arising from an accident; Local laws and customs section - there are strict rules on the disposal of all forms of waste, especially polystyrene and plastic, and any act that causes damage to coastal areas

Yes, they sell it.

Legally not required, however the police still find it an opportunity to fine.

Up to you. And yes, they sell it, hence a comprehensive list.

They also sell race car licenses after passing through their hoops...:stoner:

I got done in Cha Am few years ago with international driving licence.

Fella said it's not valid need a Thai one.

So I got a Thai DL , now I'm thinking to get the IDP doesn't cost much and I also have a spare full UK driving licence.

My worry is that should the worse happen better I have all my bases covered regarding insurance paying out.

Remember this is LOS

I heard Tommy Dee (one of the presenters) talking about this and he did not actually say it was an error but that some people thought it was incorrect........

Also note the advisory suggests the main issue is with potentially invalidating travel insurance.......

As most posters on here know if you want to avoid most possible opportunities for the police to fine you it makes sense to cover yourself as much as you can. There is still no guarantee but at least you might make them work a bit harder for it.........
