My mid 2014 MacBookPro still runs very well, but at the same time I know that over the years I have installed a few programs I shouldn't have.  Some have been a pain to uninstall and I am sure that there are still remnants of them littered throughout the file system as well as other general junk.  I'd like to get rid of that junk, if possible.  Can anyone recommend a free app to run to help clean up my system?  I don't want to appear cheap, but I'd prefer not to pay unless it is really necessary hence the request for a recommendation of a program that is free!

A bit late....I wouldn't use any of these programs, IMO they are either useless or harmful. Most programs on the Mac can be uninstalled by simply removing the program file in the application folder, and if you have a problem with an  app, I recommend a Google search on how to remove this particular app from your system. I doubt that you can have a lot of these "problematic" apps. The remnants you're referring to are in most case just smaller library files, they will never be used by the system again, once the app who created them is removed.

In any case, I wouldn't trust these cleanup apps.

CleanMyMac is probably what you're looking for but it's not free.

I’m not sure if it’s this one, but I have a friend who had a 1 year subscription for a Mac cleanup program, one that did a lot of advertising all over the Internet. She told me that about a week after her subscription expired, all of a sudden the program showed a notification that she had about a dozen harmful or suspicious elements on her computer and needed to renew her subscription to be safe again. The problem is that she had been on vacation during that time (otherwise she probably would have renewed immediately), and her iMac had never been switched on at all, so where did this suspicious elements come from? Go figure....

I installed this and it immediately picked up and removed a couple of pesky bits of malware that had been annoying me - so many thanks for the recommendation!

I remember now: The name of this program is Mackeeper. I advise strongly against it.

I’ve been using Bitdefender Virus Scanner. It was free in the Apple App Store.

That is my understanding as well. Funny how their ads pop up when I go to bootlegging sites! And Bit Defender finds hidden dmg files from them!

Let's get one thing straight, CleanMyMac is not an antivirus/malware program and neither does it monitor the comings and goings of your internet activities.  It merely cleans the detritus from your hard drive.  That's what the OP's request entailed and I have provided him with good advice, just that he has to pay for it.  It's not expensive in the grand scheme of things, though.
