Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak has asked the Tourism and Sports Ministry to propose a “Riviera Thailand” project during a Cabinet retreat in Phetchaburi on Tuesday.

Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat said on Monday that Somkid wanted the project to boost tourism on the Andaman coast of Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon and Ranong.

Weerasak said Somkid had noticed that Thai holidaymakers, especially those from Bangkok, always visited the seaside tourist spots on the Gulf of Thailand to the east of the country without paying attention to the Andaman Sea on the western side.

The Rivera Thailand project would boost tourism to communities along the Andaman coast, Weerasak added.

Back to school!

Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Chumpon DO NOT have an Andaman coast.... Only the province of Ranong touches the Andaman coast!

Pinocchio probably told him they did and he foolishly believed him.

OK, now we got the dodgy geography sorted out. Not so much Somkid or Weerasak's fault, I suspect, as careless reporting, having heard those 3 Gulf resorts mentioned. Another source does make clear that the project is to improve access and amenities at ALL the places mentioned, be they wetted by the Andaman or Gulf waters.

The cynic in me says that, regardless of which coast these resorts are situated, another 5 to 10 years down the line will show NOTHING for this pontificating. It's the cabinet retreat in Phetchaburi, tomorrow and, by Friday, the Riviera will have returned to France, again. A nice sound bite, though . . . these guys are stars at that.

No response from France yet.

Could it be that no-one is alarmed by this geographical switcharoo?

I admit that Thailand looks almost same same as the real riviera....:cheesy:

I think Thailand can also have a yacht show there for longtailboats....something like this

Whenever Thailand is involved, nothing alarms or AMAZES people . . . and they'll know that it's only hot air.

He had to talk about the Andaman coast a lot otherwise it would have been clear that he just borrowed his whole idea from Thaksins riviera plan.

And, not to be pedantic, but riviera comes from Italy, France like many others, have borrowed the term to refer to a section of their own coastline.

Where will the money for this mammoth project coming from? We are close to 50% debt to GDP with those big infrastructure projects. Not going to get the financing from budget so it will likely be off-budget which the opposition has been so against because it will not be scrutinized by Parliament. Thank god that it is only a proposal. Will die down after few weeks. Let them finish the infrastructure projects which include airports and roads before we get serious about a fantasy project.

Interesting list, as only Ranong of those four has any coastline on the Andaman...

Well, Ranong is. So he gets 1 out of 4 for effort...

C'mon have mercy with another victim of the country's multiple choice education.
