Bangkok to participate in Earth Hour, increase energy savings by 10%

BANGKOK, 7 March 2018 (NNT) - Bangkok is inviting people to turn off their lights for Earth Hour 2018 on Saturday, March 24th, as part of its campaign to save energy by another 10 percent from last year.

Deputy Governor Chakkaphan Phiew-ngarm said the event will kick off from CentralPlaza Grand Rama IX. Every year, millions of people around the world join the Earth Hour movement and switch off their lights for one hour as a gesture of support for protecting the planet and stopping climate change. This year, Earth Hour starts at 8:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, March 24th.

Since it began participating in Earth Hour 10 years ago, Bangkok has reduced energy consumption by over 16,000 megawatts, saving over 56.9 million baht and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 9.2 billion metric tons. Bangkok will also launch a social media campaign from March 17th - 24th to encourage city residents to turn off any unnecessary lights.

In 2017, Bangkok was able to reduce energy consumption by 1,953 megawatts from the previous year. That saved 7.68 million baht in electricity expenses and reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 1,016 metric tons.

I thought they did this every Friday evening for the last few years...just the TV goes off for the hours rant.

Almost 1 billion metric tonnes of CO2 per year. The trees should be happy to have all that CO2 pumped into the atmosphere to help keep them alive. While they in turn provide us humans with oxygen. Sounds like a convenient mutual arrangement. (It takes six molecules of CO2 to produce one molecule of glucose by photosynthesis, and six molecules of oxygen are released as a by-product). The world's population is growing while that same population is busy hacking down the trees that nature provided to maintain human life on earth.

The atmosphere does not just belong to humans to do with it as they see fit. And these Earth Hour people want to stuff up a perfectly good arrangement by starving the trees. TIC.

It's far too late for this meaningless waffle. Cut the world's human population by 5 billion, and the planet might be in with a chance. Malthus was wrong unfortunately.

if it were that easy....as Thailand is set for the biggest insane water wasting, road carnage fun fest on the planet..opps that will offend some of the tvf members ...whose glass is always 1/2 full...but hey'' Thailand just saved a bunch of energy for an hour''..ps...'' put that beer in an extra plastic bag please''

They should probably remind those that are driving not to participate and keep their lights on.
