Mumps outbreak in Kalasin ‘under control’

By The Nation

The outbreak of mumps in Kalasin province’s Sahasakhan district that infected 66 students and teachers in a private school has been brought under control, the district chief said on Saturday.

Sahasakhan district chief Thirapol Choknamchai said the district public health officials and the Disease Control Region 7 had not detected any more cases during the past week.

Earlier, 66 students and teachers of the school were infected with mumps. Thirapol said 55 of them were residents of Sahasakhan district and the rest lived in Muang, Somdej and Nong Krungsri districts.

Thirapol said public health officials found the outbreak had happened because the students had not received mumps vaccine properly between the ages of 3 and 12.

He said the district public health office would check the school thoroughly to make sure there would be no more infections when the school reopened after the summer holidays.

The district chief said the district public health office would check children from ages 3 to 12 to find out if they had received mumps vaccination.

The district office would continue to monitor the situation for 50 more days, he said.
