Lately, I've been seeing some advertising promotions from both TOT (who I won't do business with) and 3BB (my current home fiber internet provider) regarding their supposed 1 GB down fiber internet services, or to be more precise, internet services up to 1 GB in local download speeds.

But, whenever I look at either of their websites, the fastest home internet plans and pricing I ever see is their 200 MB down plans. So I was wondering, why are they advertising up to 1 GB plans, but their websites seem to make no mention of anything beyond 200 MB down.  And the other day, I happened to be talking on the phone to 3BB customer service on another matter, and figured I'd bring up the 1GB issue.

So it took the rep I was talking to a while to finally be able to answer my question. But in the end, she said, yes, 3BB does have home internet services available that are faster than 200 MB down, but just how fast any location can get depends on the fiber infrastructure that's reaching your location. OK, I can understand that. So I then asked, how about the pricing for the faster fiber plans beyond 200 MB down, and then she reeled off supposed plans basically in every 100 MB increments all the way up to 1 GB.

I didn't try to keep up with the pricing for all of them, but I did take down a representative sample, as follows (according to the 3BB CSR a week or so ago):

300 MB -- 4,280b per month

500 MB -- 6220b per month

1 GB or 1,000 MB -- 11,770b per month

Well, for the time being, I guess, I'm going to be sticking with my 200 MB plan for 1280b per month...  But at least, now I know...

The one bright spot is, what I'm paying now for 200 MB local speeds is pretty much what I was paying for 20 MB of local speed a few years ago. So if past trends continue into the future, what I'm paying for a 200 MB plan now probably will buy me a 1 GB or 2 GB service a few years into the future...  We'll see...

I'm in the process of switching to 3bb in pattaya right now. from what my wife told me we pay 3700 up front( i guess that's installation and router) and then 1700 a month after. and that's for the 200/100 plan. how did you get it for 1280? I'm just curious.

The 3BB 200/100 plan is 1200 + vat @ 7% = 1284 baht. Thats what I pay per month.

See this link http://www.3bb.co.th/3bb/product

My up front payment included the first months rental of 1284 baht.

I think most of the major providers (3BB, AIS, True) offer service up to 1 Gbps, and they mention that their networks are 1 Gbps-capable.

As most of this type of service is targeted at businesses you don't see a lot of advertising.

If you contact the provider I think they will have a current price list, for all sorts or service levels.

True's 1 Gbps service is 19,999/month.

I happened to sign up with 3BB on their 30/10 plan as it was their only option here and it works fine for livestreaming , so am wondering what is the advantages of the pricier options when it is available soon.

Are you referring to streaming from things like twitch, youtube? As far as streaming from IPTV from american or uk channels it'll make a difference. less buffering and smoother video especially with 4k.

AFAIK, 1200b plus 84b VAT for a total of 1284b per month is 3BB's standard monthly rate for their 200/100 MB home internet fiber plan.

When I subscribed to 3BB, the installation was free and the up-front fee was a deposit on the modem and the first month of service.

At least in BKK, the company 3BB locations (as opposed to re-seller agents) have a standard discrimination for farang customers vs. Thai customers.

When we signed up with them originally in BKK, if the account was going to be in my name, I believe they wanted a full year's payment in advance or some such ridiculous deal.  But if we signed up for the same service in my Thai wife's name, they only wanted first month service fee and I believe a 3,000b deposit for the fiber modem. Regular/routine installation was free.

I stream US TV shows, UK BBC I-Player, AUST 7- Plus and Netflix from the US servers daily, using 30/10 3BB and do not have any issues with buffering. I stream through my laptop to a 42 " Samsung HD TV at max resolution.

3BB offers an 8% discount in you prepay for 12 months of service, it's like getting 1 month free.

Yes I stream thru a Minix Box , 7 Plus , Megabox and Foxtel (Oz) with no bufferring also , however with Foxtel , sometimes the clarity does drop abit , Im guessing it happens when the net speed drops below a certain level.Maybe the next level up will rectify this minor problem.1521272083105

If you experience occasional quality issues streaming from Australia, it's probably an issue originating at the source, a problem with your streaming device or VPN and not your internet speed. 3BB's 30/10 package is more than adequate to stream video up to an including 4K.  When I can stream US TV video from half-way around the globe without issues why would I need a higher priced internet package?    If you want to stream video from several different sources to multiple outlets.at the same time, then a higher data speed package may be of some value. The actual speed of my 30/10 plan tests 32.4/12.04.

Thanks for your informative post, mate, in that case I will just stick with my current plan.I have 2 Vpns and both have been affected so Im guessing it would be more likely from the originating source.

I'm paying 1280 for 500, router and installation free. We were existing customers. Thats purchased from 3BB in Udon Thani.

Just to add, I just got the 200/100 package installed last week, I’m an existing customer.

They offered me a router/wifi access point package at 2400B, the wifi router was a d-link DIR-825, I already own a recently purchased a DIR-842 which is mu-mimo router, so their offer would have given me a cheap wifi router that will never be taken from the box.

After much discussion with 3bb on the phone and the unhappy shop staff who wouldn’t give up on the idea that my new router was incompatible, I managed to get them to sell me the single port “modem” as it was priced at 1200b in display at the shop.

It’s not free, and there was no deposit, it was a simple transaction for kit and a monthly post pay line rental of 1250 or thereabouts.

Just want to confirm, are you saying 3BB is selling a standalone fiber modem for their 200/100 MB fiber service that has no built-in routing/wifi function?

That's the first I've ever heard of that. Are you dealing with a 3BB company shop, or some 3rd party agent/vendor? And what's the brand and model number of the modem you got?

Absolutely, When I spoke to the hotline, I was confused and disappointed that I would have an excess of kit.

When I went to the shop there was a display case, there were 2 separate priced items. I objected to purchasing the “wifi access point” (in their terminology) it took a bit of discussion with the helpline and the shop, who were not happy and quite obstructive, it they were priced as two separate units.

I have a receipt here for a “ONT Huawei, GPON Terminal, SC/UPC, (1GE)” price 1121.50+78.50 VAT.

Sorry, where's your "modem" in that photo. Are you talking about the white square box on the wall?

Because the black device on the left that I see with antennas certainly appears to be a regular wifi router.

See the white box on the wall with Huawei on it, with the slim fiber cable going into the far right hand port, and the grey Ethernet cable leaving it going to the wifi router - next to the Synology NAS.

That’s the modem.

Thanks!  Good to know.

The 3BB shop I've dealt with in BKK has no hardware on display -- just a service counter where you can sign up and do the paperwork and pay. So I've never seen one of their places with actual hardware on offer.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with their wifi router, it’s a reputable brand, just my existing one has more advanced functions, they are both AC1200 gigabit routers and I hate having surplus’s kit that just sits under the stairs deteriorating in th tropical climate.

When I first signed up with 3BB for fiber a year plus ago in BKK, they had no AC routers on offer, only 2.4 GHz N standard. And, I didn't get any choice in the matter, they issued me a combo modem-router of the same Huawei variety you cited, except mine is a combo unit.

However, that's worked out OK, as I have a good purpose for dual routers in my home:

--the 3BB Huawei router gets used for my local TH wifi connections.

--my own ASUS AC dual band router gets used for my full-time VPN connection.

That way, when I want to switch between a local connection and a VPN one, it's just a matter of switching the wifi connection on my devices. The 3BB router runs on 2.4 GHz N, and my ASUS VPN router runs on 5 GHz AC, so they're not conflicting.

Are all of these plans unlimited data or is there throttling at some point?  I don't see it on their web page unless it is hidden in the Thai text.

No throttling.
