Satirical video clip of Premchai’s poaching case goes viral

By The Nation

A video clip apparently satirising the poaching case of Italian-Thai Development Premchai Karnasuta, who is accused of killing an endangered black leopard, has gone viral online.

The clip titled “Kru Krub, Ai Prem Ying Maew”, or “Teacher, Prem Has Shot a Cat”, was posted by Thanut Thangthanasup on Sunday, and since has been watched more than 1 million times and shared more than 25,100 times, drawing more than 20,000 comments.

Referring to a person with the modifier “Ai” in Thai is considered insulting.

The clip starts with a female headmaster at Ban Thunyai School punishing a female student for picking mushrooms and flowers. Then a boy rushes in and shouts: “Teacher, Ai Prem has shot a cat!”

The clip then shows a flashback of the preceding incident with a businessman, depicted as a financial sponsor of the school, talking to the headmaster and thanking her for her support, which allowed him to win a construction project to build the main road to the school.

The construction contractor was accompanied by his son, Prem, so the headmaster ordered schoolboy Wichian to take Prem on a tour the school. The boy playing Prem is chubby and wearing a T-shirt similar to that worn by Premchai when he was arrested.

In the real-life poaching case, Premchai was apprehended by Wichian Shinwong, chief of the Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary, who has since gained nationwide acclaim for doing his job despite the suspect’s wealth and high social status.

In the clip, when Wichian shows Prem the “Honest Shop”, a self-service snack shop, Prem grabs candies and snacks without leaving any money in the jar.

Wichien reminds Prem that he has not paid for the snacks, but the other boy replies: “You don’t know how much I’ve paid for this school.”

Then Prem asks Wichian if he can play with his airgun. After Prem misses his target while shooting at cans, he says he needs a moving target and then shoots and kills the school’s black cat.

After Wichian tells the headmaster about the incident, she instead tries to punish Wichian for not collecting money from Prem for the snacks.

And when Wichian reminds the teacher again and again that Prem had killed the cat, his father tells the teacher that if she punishes his son, the school would face the consequences.

The movie ends in suspense as it remains unclear what the teacher will decide.

It's ridiculous and I'm sure illegal the way this man has been harassed. He's not been convicted of anything.

There were 2 men arrested for killing 16 elephants and a few other protected species for commercial profit. Barely a public mention.

Then theres the person court with bear parts for selling for Chinese medicine, not a peep from anyone.

This guy was clearly killing because of his age old beliefs that he would be healthier by eating the parts of a tiger.

The others are commercial poaches that have probably killed dozens of protected species and will continue to kill. Nobody gives a dam. His case is clearly political propaganda and nothing more.

It really pulls on the old heart strings, doesn't it?

Not really.

But why are people over the top about it.

He believes that eating tiger penis will improve his virility, laugh if you want, but it's a deep Chinese belief.

When was the last time they prosecuted a commercial poacher huh?

It’s a nonsense belief. Just because a large group of people deeply believe in something it doesn’t make it any less incorrect or any less stupid.

If he wants to improve his virility, I suggest he takes the scientific approach of exercising and eating more healthily. But I guess that’s more work and less fun.

‘Prem killed a cat!’ Viral video reflects cultural phenomenon

By THE NATION

AFTER GRAFFITI murals of slain black leopards seized the public’s attention, satire has become the new subversive symbolism highlighting injustice linked to the wildlife poaching case involving construction tycoon Premchai Karnasuta.

A video clip titled “Kru Krub, Ai Prem Ying Maew”, or “Teacher, Prem Has Shot a Cat”, was posted by Thanut Thangthanasup on Sunday, and since has been watched more than 1 million times and shared more than 25,100 times, drawing more than 20,000 comments.

The movie ends in suspense as it remains unclear what the teacher will decide.

And the video is only the latest creative offering about a criminal case that has become a cultural phenomenon.

Musician Xumet Ong-art recently wrote “Sat Narok Haeng Thungyai”, in English translating as “Hell-bound Beast of Thung Yai”, about a wealthy hunter intent on taking as a trophy the black leopard of Thung Yai. The song relates that the man kills the animal and is arrested, but he is fearless because of his money and connections.

“Some beasts kill to survive, but some hell-bound beasts kill for pleasure,” reads one lyric.

In another case, TV host Ketusephsyswasdi “Na Nake” Palakavangsa Na Ayudhaya sang a parody of the pop song “Koisuru Fortune Cookie” by the Thai girl group BNK48 to condemn people involved in killing the leopard. Others have tweaked the lyrics of “Into The Woods” by Max Jenmana to criticise a cruel, wealthy man who kills wildlife.

Even the clergy have become involved. The famed Buddhist monk, Phra Maha Sompong Talaputto, joked during a talk on March 8 that when visitors encounter tigers in the forest, they should chant the mantra “Premchaya, Premcha Premchai” twice, which would send tigers running for safety.

The point of my posts, here and past posts, is that, there have been several commercial poachers caught and none of them are facing the charges and media attention that he is getting.

It doesn't excuse that he did wrong.

The battering  that he is recieveing is out of proportion to his crime. When the commercial poachers are killing dozens of animals every year without a single prosecution.

That’s because people feel he will escape any punishment. Which is what usually happens with the rich and powerful. People are laying on pressure in an attempt to make sure justice is served.

If it were some lowly commoner who’d done this, they’d be in prison already.

I believe you are both making very valid arguments here.

In greenchair's case, he, IMO, is quite correct in that large scale poachers that have been apprehended but have not received the justice, publicity and public scorn that has been aimed at Premchai.  Not to excuse Premchai's actions,  as he knew exactly where he was and what his group were doing and rightfully deserves this shame.

They were not there to cook some sausages by the river and sing Thai songs over a few bottles of Napoleon brandy.

He will, however escape any serious punishment, as we have seen from the very beginning the wheels of the elite system have turned very smoothly in his favour,  right down to the chief of police practically kissing his brass.

Well , you are wrong.

The lowly commoners are not being arrested. Even wichian the park official said, the villagers come and kill the animals but they do it because they are poor. In other words, park officials let them.

Well, you’re gonna have to provide links. Can’t just say people are wrong.

There was a story right here on thai visa a couple of days ago.

2 poachers caught. 16 elephants tails and some tusks. The tails are to be sold as keyrings.

The other poacher caught had a bag full of bear parts, taking to sell to be made into Chinese medicine. But BP so can't do that. The original story had wichian talking about the villagers poaching right here on thai visa.

I don't know how to link.

I don't want to know.

More like a North Korean anti-capitalism propaganda video....

Will no doubt get many positive reviews here from all 'hate the rich' posters...:coffee1:

The video is only hating the rich that use their financial power to evade justice.

A link to a park official in this case excusing the poor to poach is here. The only reason this case gets so much press is people hate the rich. I support all of the charges and condemnation he is getting for such a heinous crime--serves him right. I just wish the poor were held to this same standard. But sadly no one cares about saving wildlife, this case is only prominent because there is a rich guy in it. The poor take what they want out of the forests every day of the year and no one gives a hoot.

I don't want to know.

The fact remains this is a high profile case given his position in society and therefore the public are more interested. Which sells more papers or get more clicks.

I am sure poor old premchai being a business man understands that relationship..as the old adage goes all publicity is good publicity. Although he probably disagrees with it now.

And Thai rangers are pretty solid on poachers. Perhaps premchai would have prefered this outcome.

I could go on.

The Thai rangers are a fairly solid bunch.
