91 rounded up for road racing in Bangkok

By The Nation

Bangkok police arrested 90 motorcyclists and a pillion rider and seized 90 bikes in an operation to prevent racing on the capital’s streets.

The arrests were made by police from 10 Bangkok police stations who manned road checkpoints late on Friday night and early on Saturday.

At the end of the operation, Pol Maj-General Surachet Hakpal held a press conference at 3am at Tha Kham Police Station to announce the results.

Surachet said 45 of the arrested were under 18 years old. He added that seven of the 91 were females.

Surachet said police would continue to step up their crackdown on road racing ahead of the Songkran holidays and the crackdowns are also aimed at preventing teens from using their summer school holidays for racing on roads.

He said the 45 teens under 18 and their parents would be summoned to meet police on April 3 for attitude adjustment and the parents would be warned that if their kids were arrested again, they could be jailed for supporting illegal activities.

What is the point of arresting them? These bikes should be confiscated and get the owners invited to the scrap yard to see how the compactor crushes the bikes.

Nothing like this will change as long as these little darling keep getting their bikes back

after mommy and daddy pay the fines and collect their little angels until the next time

they are arrested again. Thailand will not change in our life times.

Geezer

seized 90 bikes

Not sure what happens to the bikes once they are 'seized'.  Are they given back to the offenders the next morning, after 24 hours, after 1 week???

The parents are the culprits - giving their kid a motorcycle and not monitoring how they are being used.  The police should keep the bikes until a 10,000 baht fine is paid or until the kids reach 18 years old.  A 200 baht fine does nothing to deter anyone from doing anything!

Not 100% sure but Vietnam crushes the bikes, or did do.

Good job this sort of thing ( young people racing cars and bikes on public highways ) is peculiar only to Thailand.

You've obviously travelled extensively and done a lot of research to be able to confidently besmirch a whole nation.

Happen every weekend good job to the police force and I like to hear parents have responsibility too

It depends on how think are the brown envelopes brought in by their parents. The thicker the faster.
