Wow so mant great places to eat in Chiangmai. I love to eat!! I love Chanchaos reviews and after meeting all at Mango Tree I got lots of good info!! I forgot who told me but they had said that a New Buritto house opened at Rimping novotel.

Well Since I am addicted to Mexican food I was there next day here are my Impressions- :o

had a 49 baht taco and a 49 baht enchilada.not to impressed. but the pictures of all the food looked good!! Thats about the best part of it- the visual!!

I think it had 2 Thai owners as i saw them deliver some precooked food. I was really hoping to see a Farang owner as it probably would have been better if they knew the food

-as Thailand is a tad far from Mexico

My Estimate is 6 months until its closed.

Maybe i can buy the pretty pictures!!

I'm still on the hunt!!!-R

I ate at Filmore East last nite and had the large filet and i tell you it was the best ###### steak i have eaten in thailand. I highly reccomend it, but its not cheap I think almost 1k baht- but boy was it worth it . Ron the owner runs a Proffesional operation. High marks to him!!!-R

Come to thiunk of it Amazing Sandwich just opened a second location across from Orchid hotel.

I hear Mike's Original is selling a franchise for....3 million baht? Fillmore East is on the block for 1.5 mil....

And I assume the owner of Amazing Sandwich has income coming from another source...I have yet to ever see a customer there when I've gone in for a sandwich- which, in my opinion, are just so-so at best anyway, but convenient when you've got a hankerin'. If he had turkey or roast beef sandwiches, and Kasem's French bread, I might not beef so much :D

By the way, any suggestions for a great Roast Beef sandwich?

And how about some Peking Duck?

Turkey and Roast beef Sandwiches thats what they should turn the burritto house into at Novotel rimping.

Real deli sandwiches and good sliced meats and cheeses which are available in Bangkok but not so avail here!-R

I may be Mistaken, but I think there are three Burito Houses in town .. the other two being located at Central Airport Plaza and off of Suthep Rd near CMU. I don't believe I have ever seen anyone in at the CAP location (except me 1 time) but the CMU location looks busy.

Good Mexican food is the one thing I always miss in Asian cities. My Brother-in-Law is of Spanish-Mexican heritage, cooks KILLER Mexican food and is married to a Thai. Maybe I could convince him to move to CM with me and open a Mexican restaurant.

What do you think, would it be more trouble than it's worth? I've heard the restaurant business is tough; add to that the complications of "owning" and running one in a foreign country.

One more question: Tex-Mex, California Mex, or "authentic" Mex (i.e. Jalisco, Monterrey or Yucatan style)? Maybe a combination?

Mexican food is easy to make, and all ingredients are available locally...Also, there's a real nice profit margin on many Mexican dishes....Vegies, rice, beans, corn, cheap meat cuts, mostly. Easy to prep and store, too. ...Also easy to train Thais to make well :o

I've always been interested in owning a restaurant, but not in running one...Too many headaches for me- I'm trying to relax more, not make more work for myself.

But, I might be interested in backing someone in a Mexican food venture, be it in a fixed restaurant, or as a mobile kitchen.... :D

But not a newbie to CM. Too much to know first, otherwise, I might as well have my housekeeper cooking- she makes great Mexican food for me :D

We are investigating adding Mexican at Mango Tree and would be most grateful for any suggestions. Personally I really miss the Chicken Molé cooked by an old half French/ Half Mexican Neighbour. Boy, could she cook.

p1p maybe try a set day of week to do a mexican food night. I dont know how it would work if people would want it. I have extensive mexican food/restaurant background if you need help pm me.

- but like everything, everyone has that famous recipe that aunt edna makes at holidays and says if it becomes mass produced theyll all be millionaires. everyones tastes are different as you know probably better than anyone on the board

you just need to make some good basics beans, rice, salsa and can make 20 different combos!

Rasta Cafe is on the corner of Ratwithee and Ratchaphakinai road. :-) If this doesn;t ring a bell: Ratwithee is where the Irish Pub is. Right after the Irish pub is a tiny soi on the right. Go in there and then immediately left, you get to an area that used to be just wasteland (or some would argue: still is) but where some bamboo backpacker type raggae bars have opened up. One of those is the Rasta Cafe.

(Alternatively, continue past the Irish Pub until the traffic lights, then go right and immiediately right again into the same area)

Haven't had food at any of those places. One place does a Western food buffet. As the target seems backpackers, I'm not holding my breath, but who knows.. :o

You ask, we deliver.. ;-) There are some Chinese hi-so restaurants/pattakans in the Chiang Mai Land area. Tried one just around the corner of Chiang Mai Land on the inner ring road. Was very impressed with the place, though it was my first Peking Duck anywhere (ahem..) so I can't compare.

The dim sum also looked VERY promising, since going to Hong Kong once, most Thai dim sum doesn't excite me anymore, but this place is definitely promising! (Didn't order too much of it because of the Peking Duck set is such a load of food)

Oh yes: the way they server their 8-herb Chinese tea is completely out of this world.

Tried one just around the corner of Chiang Mai Land on the inner ring road.

Very Hi So. They specialise in the multitude of exotic mushrooms served in Suki style. The Dim Sum is trendy, interesting and quite pleasant, but I found myself craving for some Cantonese staples. The Suki is also good but I find the place to be one to take friends or clients from Bkk or overseas, rather than a regular family outing type place.

Tea is delicious and spectacular.

Yes, though I found the staff rather pleasant and easy-going.. Not overly stuck-up in any way. Is there anyone who could compare it with the other upmarket Chinese restaurants in Chiang Mai, such as one or two on Chiang Mai Land road itself?

The only place that I really thought was overly formal was Le Coq d'Or.

check out "the salsa kitchen" accross from the rasta cafe. i think it's the best Mexican in town.

Checked Rasta cafe Yesterday only had a quesadilla but boy was it good will go back and have dinner soon. It is in a big backpacker cafe area with a few rasta bars.

The owner John is from Canada so we are getting much closer to mexican influence than the thai owners of the Burrito houses.

But I would recommend as best in Cm So far-R

Not sure if Chiang Rai makes it into this thread but if it does I would definately give the Siam Corner restaurant a plug. Meals under 100baht and one of the best I have eaten at. Cheese omellette for breakfast is a must if you like a good omellette. All meals I had there were outstanding.

I've never had really satisfying mexican food in Thailand. Definitley something I miss. Art Cafe does a couple dishes, but you really have to have been away from the US for a long time to enjoy them.

As the ingredients are so simple, I've got to think that it can be done here. But it seems like everyone who does it here cuts corners. Yoghurt instead of sour cream. Salsa made with Thai chilis. Roti instead of a genuine flour tortilla. Cheap beans. Its the little things that make the difference.

I've always said that if someone here could mimic good California Tex Mex even if it was a little pricy, they would do well.

I did check out the Rasta Cafe, I think also known as The bagel cafe. I was quite surprised to find that it was very good. Still not there yet, but definitley the best I've had in Chiang Mai. Oddly, its a real backpacker place, with no air and only one waitress, but the food is quite good...

So.. just to get this straight, The Salsa Kitchen is NOT the same place as the Rasta Cafe correct? Merely close to it? I'm very unimpressed with the vibe & service level (or absense thereof) at the Rasta cafe.. Like when you want a drink you have to go get it yourself at the bar, and pay on the spot.

I didn't come to Thailand to queue up for my drinks again! ;-)

My mistake. I know nothing about the Rasta Cafe. The place I went to is 'The Bagel Cafe's Salsa Kitchen'. There's no walls. No air con. One waitress. And the food takes forever, but it is easily the best mexican food I've had here. Excellent bagels too.

CMT. Good to see you back again!

Is the bagel cafe that was next to Patrick's bar still in operation. Last few times I dropped over they were closed and I have been unable to get them on the phone.

I ate at the Scorpion (loy kroh rd) a couple times this week for the first times. Solid. Not cheap, but a good value...excellent pates, good beef & duck. Cheap, but cheap wine, if you know what I mean. Voluminous quantities. They have what I believe to be a dead dog. Didn't stir for the 90 minutes we were there either trip. I need to be so relaxed. Also in regard to chinese food.... good (and cheap) roast duck on doi suket, a couple hundred meters west of Wat Suan Dok...no name that I could discern, but hard to miss the hanging ducks.
