The Russian man suspected of attacking a Thai woman in a Pattaya exchange booth and making off with nearly 700,000 baht in cash has told police they have got the wrong man.

Nikolay Rybalov, 34, was arrested while attempting to leave Thailand at Suvarnabhumi airport with his Russian wife at the weekend.

Earlier Sunee Kaewyu, 30, was assaulted and robbed in the booth on Sukhumvit Road outside the Ambassador City Hotel in Jomtien.

The suspect was apprehended within ten hours of the crime.

Pol Gen Chalermkiat Sriworakhan said after a meeting at Na Jomtien police station yesterday that Rybalov "continues to deny everything despite overwhelming evidence".

He was found in possession of a black bag from the robbery. He said the money - 670,320 baht's worth of local and US currency - was his.

An associated motorcycle and car were found parked in the airport lot.

Pol Gen Chalermkiat said that the suspect was an ex military man who had come to Thailand a year ago and had failed to find work and seen his savings dwindle as a result.

He said he desperately needed money so that he could take it back to Russia to start over.

Investigations are continuing to see whether his wife was involved.

The suspect will be charged in court in Pattaya on Tuesday.

Meanwhile the owner of the booth Chatchaya Chaiyayongkoon, 33, presented a bouquet to the cops as thanks for their quick work in the case.

She said that Sunee had been hit 13 times and was recovering from facial injuries in a hospital in Sri Racha.

not only a piece of crap, but a very stupid piece of crap to deny this when there is so much evidences.

a bit strange tho, he admits he desperate for money to take Russia and start again..

yet he has 600+baht in a bag???

how he explain that?

the way the article explains it just doesnt add up.

i think a few inconsistency in reporting as usual

How on earth is the guy going to explain away a lot of money in different currencies in his possession, and a similar amount taken at the robbery....

oh well... he was a soldier, and may try to claim it's old war booty from wherever else he's invaded recently

Not a very smart Russian , did not cover his tracks , renting the bike in his own name etc. He must have been desperate . Easy job for the police in the end.

He’s probably aware of the Thai justice system and is denying guilt until sentencing. After the sentence is announced, he’ll admit it and have his sentence reduced by half.

Sent from my iPad using Thaivisa Connect

That won't work, you have to admit before sentencing, in fact that doesn't always seem to work, there was a case where the criminal admitted everything but only after the police showed him overwhelming evidence so his admittance of guilt made no difference to his sentence.

Sounds like he has taken lessons from his leader. You know, Vlad?

The russian is taking a leaf out of deceitful don's book...

Deny everything, cry foul play and fake news

How you can draw a comparison to the US leader, DJT, just shows you're kind of confused on world geography. Russia "Deny everything, cry foul play". DJT "fake news". You mixed them together. Doesn't work.
