Do I need a letter of Cancellation on ED Visa ( no extension)

Recommended Posts

I am currently in Thailand on an ED visa (my first 90 days no extension) and have attended courses regularly.  Unfortunately due to a recent health scare, I need to go back to the USA with no current plans on returning.  I have heard conflicting information on what is needed when exiting the country.  Please note my 90 day ED visa does not expire until the end of May.  However, I have a flight scheduled for this upcoming week.  I have a valid Passport, Visa stamp from my home country as well as a departure card.

Any advice or information is greatly appreciated.

My departure location is CNX,

You don't need to inform the immigration.

Just inform the school that you are leaving and get a confirmation letter from them.

If the school want to cancel the visa, it's their job. If they don't cancel, it's their problem too.

If you disappear without telling the school, it might be difficult for you to get an Ed Visa in the future because the school might think you are not serious in studying and inform immigration that you skipped classes.

On the basis of this, you might be blacklisted for any Ed Visa in the future. Just my thought.

just to add to this.  If you ever come back to Thailand and apply again if no one officially cancels your visa when you try to reapply you might have issues.

I personally did not cancel a ed visa and went to Laos to  do a new one with another school.  I came back and everything seemed fine.  Then when the 90 day reports came around I was told  that my new ED Visa was not officially valid  as I did not cancel my old ED Visa.  They told me I was on overstay 90 days until I corrected this.  I had to go back to my old school and get an official copy and everything was cleared up though there was some talk of me having to leave the country and come back again. thankfully that didnt happen.

I would not rely on your school to take the steps to cancel your visa... just food for thought if you plan on coming back.

I'm sure you were on an extension of stay and not the original 3 months of the visa. If you leave the country, your visa is cancelled if it's single-entry. However, if it's been extended, you'll need to inform Immigration that the extension has been cancelled.

Yes, that's true.

Unless you have a reentry permit, whatever visa you had is automatically cancelled once you leave the country.

That's why we have to pay for the expensive reentry permit visa.

this was after a full year school visa.  I went to another country to get a new ed visa for another school after the full year.  It was the 90 days check of the new visa I was told that I have to official cancel my old visa with immigration with a letter from the school, even though it was expired anyway.  Yes it is weird, perhaps that is how the immigration officer understood it at the time, rules and how they are interpreted at the time.   In any case the OP has no plans to come back so it doesn't matter anyway:)

Not returning, but I did notify the school as a courtesy and they sent me the cancellation letter to coincide with my flight just in case I get asked for one.  In the end, its a win win and all my bases are covered.
