Justice Ministry permanent secretary Wisit Wisitsora-at on Thursday presented more than Bt100,000 in assistance money to the family of an 82-year-old Bangkok garbage scavenger who died last month after being kicked and beaten following a minor collision.

Chaluay Jarit-ek, the widow of Jaroon Maneephan, and their children Praphot and Wanida Maneephan received Bt115,270, which included Bt20,000 for his funeral and Bt50,000 in compensation for his death.

Jaroon died in hospital on March 29, 16 days after he was assaulted by Narathorn Sodetiyung, 21, whose motorcycle bumped into the elderly man’s tricycle in a narrow soi in Huai Kwang district.

Narathorn has been charged with causing death by inflicting injury without intent to cause death, for which he could be imprisoned for 3-15 years.

Wisit said police were still gathering evidence but would soon forward the case to prosecutors who would decide whether an indictment was justified.

The family was compensated in accordance with the Damages for Injured Persons Act and Compensation and Expenses for the Accused in Criminal Cases Act.

Wisit said the ministry would also provide the family with legal advice if they decide to sue for additional compensation in Civil Court.

Sue the toerags arze off.

quote "Wisit said police were still gathering evidence but would soon forward the case to prosecutors who would decide whether an indictment was justified."

If the video and witnesses are not enough evidence for the prosecutors it is time for them to be retrained, possibly as roadsweepers.

typical how much more bloody evidence do they need it is all there, just get on with it and let this little <deleted> spend some time  in jail, wow i bet that he thought that was big attacking an 83 year old guy. what this country need desparately is vigilantes, who show up at the perps door and kick the shit out of them and see how they like it, especially all these guys who beat up defenceless females we get to see every week now.

"Who would decide whether an indictment was justified" ? How many times would the attacker have to kill the poor guy for a clear indictment ?

He was just a garbage scavenger so all you get is 100 grand, let's hope that the piece of human excrement who killed him doesn't live to be 1/3 of his age.

I guess the 21 year old has rich parents or powerful family.

What a shame that he will get minimum time in jail, Thai justice

makes me sick. Well actually It is the daily corruption that does.

Geezer

Gathering evidence ?? seriously ?? Its pretty clear what happened from the video !!

Yes his death may not have anything to do with the assault but I would say it was a factor and surely from the autopsy this would be asked and the results known !!

Didn't the old man die of natural causes as I have read before? Anyhow, the compensation is a joke, especially when someone like Andy Hall is sued for 20 Million over a defamation cause.
