The man at the center of a "live broadcast" rape case in Chonburi is now in police custody and was shown at provincial headquarters yesterday.

"Pleum" Khammee, 20, denies rape though he said he knows the victim named only as "A" who is 14.

Social Services are interviewing the girl while the mother is also believed to be a person of interest to the police because of loan sharking allegations.

Thai Rath reported that sources told them the alleged rapist is from Ratchaburi who was working in the Don Hua Lor area of Chonburi. It is said that he was known as the boyfriend of the victim.

Thai Rath added that Chonburi police had arrested him in an unspecified place outside their jurisdiction. It appeared that Pleum had agreed to give himself up to the authorities.

That Rath called the case a "live broadcast" rape.

He faces charges of statutory rape of a minor under 15 years of age.

There's a huge collection of literature called the Tripithakha. It mostly consists of essays that are called Suttas (in the Pali language, which is very similar to Sanskrit). Then there's an additional set of "sermons" in Sanskrit, which are revered by the Mahayana sect. In addition there is an enormous literature in many languages which varies according to sect. If you really want to know I recommend you read The Story of Buddhism: A Concise Guide to its History & Teachings, by Donald S. Lopez, Jr. It's a brief summary of the main outlines. Only 275 pages, including an index.

This is called "rape" because of the girl's age. If she was 16 it wouldn't be. This would not have been anything unusual before passage of the anti-prostitution law of 1996, and I presume a lot of Thais still don't know about the change.

It is called Statutory Rape , there is a big difference.

Sort of*    but linking Thailand with Buddhism is stretching it.

*  The Dhammapada (Pāli; Prakrit: धम्मपद Dhammapada;)

It is called ‘statutory rape’ because the girl, at age 14, is deemed legally incapable of giving consent.
