Grab Thailand has announced plans to launch its ride hailing and food delivery services in Hua Hin on May 17.

Grab services, which include Grab Taxi, Grab Bike, Grab Car and the newly launched Grab Food are currently available in 16 provinces in Thailand, with the firm planning to launch in a further 4 provinces before the end of the year.

A post confirming its plan to launch in Hua Hin was made on the Grab Facebook page.

For those not aware how Grab works, customers can request a taxi in the form of a car or motorbike through the Grab app.

The app knows your location and then you tell it where you want to go. You can either pay in cash or through the app once you reach your destination.

Grab made headlines in March when it announced its acquisition of the Southeast Asia operation of ride hailing rival Uber.

I wonder if it will be the same rip-off operation it has become in Pattaya since Uber vanished, now charging three times the rates that are being charged in CM for example.

I was quoted 240 THB for a less than 3 KM ride few days ago, the same ride was 120 Baht (before the ubiquitous Promo discount) with Uber 2 months ago.

And in CM it would have cost me no more than 80 Baht with the local Grab there

Well only one way to find out....is to use it !

Still the arrival of Grab will calm down some of the freelance taxi cheats in Hua Hin.

Competition will make the prices more realistic.

One could for exemple go up to one of the freelance taxis in HH parked on the sidewalks with no customers, show him the rate of the journey on the GRAB app, and ask the fellow if he wants to do it for less. This has worked often in Bangkok. If the driver is stupid he will naturally refuse...if he is a slightest bit intelligent, he will take the run.

Enjoy and don't get ripped off,  as you as a customer are entitled to have the last word with these Thai taxi cheats.
