On Guard: Grave doubts raised over Phuket's fragmented lifeguard coverage

PHUKET: Events over the past two weeks have highlighted the critical need for trained lifeguards to patrol Phuket’s beaches and for rescue teams to receive proper training in how to handle such reports and act accordingly.

A 36-year-old Thai tourist died from drowning despite being pulled from the surf by bystanders at Layan Beach last week (May 1). Attempts to revive the tourist, Sanya Makwut, failed and other tourists were forced to watch as his body was carried away.

There are no lifeguards on patrol at Layan beach, or at the adjoining Leypang Beach, and the death of Mr Sanya marked the first beach drowning of the year during the notorious southwest monsoon, when dangerous surf and flash rips dominate along Phuket’s west coast.

Anyone who thinks the current situation is adequate, needs their heads bashed..

The awarding of the contract, very quietly, to the BKK based company smells worse than the sea water at Patong !!

It's all a sham..

People will continue to die and the show will go on..

The Chinese delegation that visited were just shown what they wanted to see, back to normal the following day...

Took them long enough to come-up with that little gem!  Meanwhile, several lives have been lost!

Incompetent Buffoons!

Remember the mayor in the picture with those lifeguards showing the tourists they were in safe hands with there lifeguards. That picture was all bullshit. Those lifeguards were just a couple of Thais grabbed off the street gave 500 baht to get there picture taken. The company that was awarded that contract long gone. Probably the mayor was the head of that company. When this famous video the junta makes about there achievements it will be better than watching a comedy show. Corruption is flourishing in Thailand and its getting worse.

The BKK company got a nice fat contract for a few beaches, while all the other areas were left to fend for themselves.

I have seen lifeguards at Nai Harn, but that's probably the exception to local gov't providing lifeguard services.

Another drowning within the next 2 weeks....you wouldn't get very good odds at the bookies on that bet unfortunately.

They blatantly lied to the Chinese delegation recently, there's a care factor of absolute 0 from those in-charge.

I would be interested to know the political affiliations of the people in charge of the beach areas that did not get the life guards?
