Creating a static IP address and port forwarding for True Fiber/Huawei Echolife HG8247H router

Hi,

I just got connected to 50/20Mbs True fibre package, upgraded from my old 10Mbs 3bb package. Speed test seems fine, and website loading time is faster, but torrents are abysmal. I used to get max 1Mbs download speed on 3bb, getting 200kbs with this connection. (these are torrents with many private seeders)

I think its because I need to set port forwarding on my router, so followed the guide on https://portforward.com

First step is to create a static IP address for my laptop, however following the guide on portfoward I have this issue: https://portforward.com/networking/static-ip-windows-10.htm

Note: If your DNS Servers listed the same IP address as your Default Gateway, read the following!

The DNS server (Domain Name System) server can get a bit complicated. Some router's act as an intermediary between for the actual DNS servers and your computer. If this is the case your Default Gateway will list the same IP address as the DNS Servers entry. We need to have the correct DNS Server IP addresses not the Default Gateway. You will not be able to use the Internet if we don't find out what your actual DNS servers are. There are a couple different ways to find these. The first way is to log into your router's web interface and look at your router's status page. On that page you should see an entry for DNS Servers, or Name Servers. Write down the IP addresses of these DNS Servers. Another way to find out what the correct DNS Servers to use, is to call your local Internet Service Provider or ISP.

(although they state if I use the DNS in the static IP settings, I shouldnt be able to access the internet, although it still seems to work fine if i use the ip stated)

Does any body know the name servers True fibre use?  Or if I call True should it be a simple process to get this info from them?  (I had a look in the routers admin UI, didnt seem to state DNS anywhere)

Also does any one have experience setting port forward in Huawei Echolife HG8247H router?  I followed the guide here: https://portforward.com/huawei/hg8247h/, but the autofill settings for utorrent seems to be missing some info.  I tried it any way and i didn't work.

Did some more research online and find what looked like the correct settings, but still the ports dont seem to be open.  (but perhaps that's because I had just set my static IP address DNS as the incorrect one above, would that effect the status of the port forward? )

Thanks,

Rang True and found out there DNS is:

Primary:      203.144.207.49
Secondary: 203.144.207.29

Still cannot get the routers port to open, any tips?

Which torrent client are you using? Are you able to utilize any of its' testing measures?

Which version of Windows?

Did you have any issues before? Were you using port forwarding with your previous service/router?

In theory, you shouldn't have to mess with port forwarding. Just configure your Torrent app. properly (tick use UpnP) and allow Windows to pass the Torrent app. through the firewall.

I'm using qbittorrent on windows 10.

On my old 3BB router I was using port forwarding, so UpnP was switched off.  However, I switched it on last night and also followed some guides to optimise qbitorrent settings for my new connection speed.

Working better now, im getting DL speeds between 1mbs and 4mbs.

Thanks for the tips and links.  I had read all these already and everything seems fine in my router, but the ports still wont open.  However, if UpnP setting does the job just as well as manual port forward I'll leave it as that.

Although I've read that UpnP is not exactly secure.

After you make changes in the configuration of these routers you have to remember to "save" (Apply) the new configuration. I know that on the HG8245H model I've often forgotten this step more than once when setting up fixed local IP addresses, and "Forward Rules" and "Port Mapping Configuration" for port fowarding.
